Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Fair. Fair condition, sold as-is due to significant structural wear consistent with its age (circa 1890s). The spine is heavily deteriorated, splitting, and separating from the text block - the binding is broken/detached and will need care in handling or rebinding. Front and back cover illustrations show heavy wear with significant color/paint loss; the back cover image is almost entirely worn away. Pages are heavily tanned with age, and some pages show tears and edge damage. The interior text block itself appears largely complete. No dust jacket. Book.…

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. Revised Edition. First published in 1887, this is a revised edition of c. 1920. Some edge wear and chipping to top and bottom of jacket (showing a 1920s cook displaying a jelly) and spine, some overall slight spotting and time staining, corners rubbed with small loss, folds rubbed, not price clipped ((6/-), small unsigned engraved slip tipped in (With the Compliments of the Author), Internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy for its age. 664pp, lavishly illustrated. Agnes Bertha Marshall (born Agnes Beere Smith 1852-1905), was an English culinary entrepreneur, inventor, and celebrity chef. An unusually prominent businesswoman for her time, Marshall was particularly known for her work on ice cream and other frozen desserts, which in Victorian England earned her the nickname 'Queen of Ices'. Marshall popularised ice cream in England and elsewhere at a time when it was still a novelty and is often regarded as the inventor of the modern ice cream cone. Through her work and popular cookery school (which taught English and French Haute Cuisine), Marshall may be largely responsible for both the look and popularity of ice cream today. Marshall and her husband also operated an innovative business selling patented cooking equipment such as her ice cream freezer, Mrs Marshall also ran promotional tours to popularise her books and school, one of the first chefs to do so. In 1904, Marshall fell from a horse and suffered injuries from which she never properly recovered. She died of cancer the next year. Marshall was one of the most celebrated cooks of her time and one of the foremost cookery writers of the Victorian age, particularly on ice cream. Her recipes were renowned for their detail, simplicity and accuracy, indeed I have just tried her recipe for Chicken Fricassee, and apart from making some small adjustments (I am not cooking for 12 people), and substituting chicken stock for water to poach my chicken in, it was delicious (it was obvious that Mrs Marshall bought her chickens whole with feathers). Despite her fame in life, Marshall's name faded into obscurity after her death. Her husband continued to operate their businesses but they declined without Marshall's personality and drive. In 1921, the company was sold and became a limited company and in 1954 it ceased operations. Marshall's cookery school remained in operation until the outbreak of World War II. She was somewhat rescued by Elizabeth David, who referred to her a the 'famous Mrs Marshall' and writer Robin Weir who assessed Marshall in 2015 as a 'unique one woman industry' whose achievements were 'arguably unequalled' and who 'deserves much more credit than she has been given by history'. A very scarce book with jacket. Small illegible artist's signature to jacket, Robey? Larbey? (illustratore).…

Aggiungi al carrelloFine art. Small portfolio with brief explanatory captionings (titling & signature in each plate) providing a single pocket for the as-called-for four b&w plates. All four impressions appear to have been struck from engraved plates, all display intaglio frame-depressions within which 5.5x7.5 inch images appear to be original strikes pressed upon 8x10.5 sheets of alkaline semi-cardstock - although the images themselves are less textured than one would expect from steel-engraved strikes. We are not good judges, but the results are quite presentable in any case. Plates are immaculate, the light portfolio bears offset smudges, fleck-soiling, and mild edgewear. An enlightening catch-penny undertaken by an advertising agency. Barrymore, a cinema giant, could also limn seagulls & sailboats & coastal shanties pretty darn well.…

Aggiungi al carrelloCondizione: Near Fine. A lively and colorful painting of two members of the French garde du corps or cuirassier -- mounted cavalry, in uniforms that resemble those used during the Bourbon Restoration -- 1815 to 1830. Scribbled in pencil on the back is the date 1818, but we don't know exactly what this is intended to signify. Whether that date has specific significance, or using the wider range of dates for the Restoration period, we certainly can not assert that the painting was done contemporaneously with the period it is depicting. But since we know that the painting was once mounted in an album, and the album paper was a type found in Victorian, or nineteenth century albums, we are comfortably dating the painting to the nineteenth century. The painting looks professionally done, and as if it were intended as an illustration for a book. We couldn't another copy of the painting, or for that matter, of a uniform like the one worn by the trumpet, with its wide, bold, vertical striped of both the coat and breeches. The painting is signed by an initial or initials and possibly a number -- we aren't able to interpret what is a stylized signature of sorts. In any case, even if the painting is a copy, it was done exceedingly well. The painting measures 26.5 by 21 cm. The back has light soiling as well as vestiges in the corners of album paper onto which it was once mounted. In terms of the image, there are no issues. The paper along the upper edge has a closed tear at most a mm long.…
