[light shelfwear, a nice solid book; jacket has tiny tears and minor paper loss at spine ends, one small chip at bottom of front panel]. (8 B&W film stills, pen & ink drawings) INSCRIBED and SIGNED on the ffep by Diana Serra Cary, "Baby Peggy," star of the 1924 silent film for which this edition of the book was a tie-in. Ms. Cary, who passed away earlier this year at the age of 101, signed the book in 2000 -- 76 years after the original release of the film, in which she starred as one of the two mischievous children (a sister and brother in the story, but both girls in the film) who are placed in the care of their young bachelor uncle when their parents go off to spend the weekend with friends. The book was originally published with no author attribution in 1876, but by the early 1900s it was known to be the work of Habberton (1842-1921), an American writer and drama critic. A young Clara Bow, who had a supporting role in the film as the uncle's romantic interest, is depicted in two of the stills illustrating the text. Signed by Actress.

Dwiggins in black ink on the colophon. Widely known for coining the term 'Graphic Designer' in 1922, William Addison Dwiggins (1880-1956) was an American typographer, illustrator, type designer, and calligrapher, whose typographical inventions are still employed and revered today in the world of book design and advertising. His most iconic typefaces include Metro (1929), Electra (1935), and Caledonia (1938), and their variations. As an illustrator for children's books including Stevenson's 'Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde', Dwiggins' drawings have been praised for their 'sparing use of colour' and effective use of black and white illustrations (Encyclopedia Design, 2021). This is the definitive first edition with Dwiggins' illustrations. A trade edition was later published in Canada in 1945. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers.
