Full brown cloth with gilt blind stamped illustration of a tiger on front cover. Black label and gilt lettering on spine. Jacket is not price-clipped but does have tape reinforcement to the back of the jacket at the top & bottom of spine and at the corners. The tape has yellowed causing darkening to the jacket visible fromt front of the jacket. One half inch closed tear to front panel. Overall EXCELLENT condition book in a VERY GOOD minus jacket. Guy Mountfort (December 4, 1905 - April 24, 2003) was an English ornithologist and conservationist. Born in London, Mountfort was the author of A Field Guide to the Birds of Britain and Europe (1954), with illustrations by Roger Tory Peterson and distribution maps by Philip Hollom. In 1961 he created the World Wildlife Fund with Julian Huxley, Peter Scott and Max Nicholson. In 1972 he led the campaign to save the Bengal Tiger, persuading Indira Gandhi to create nine tiger reserves in India, with eight others in Nepal and Bangladesh. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The author was invited by King Hussein of Jordan to conduct an expedition to explore the disappearing wildlife and vegetation of that country. The expedition included Julian Huxley and travelled three thousand miles through desert and mountain passes, and included Azraq oasis with its Roman fortress used by Lawrence of Arabia, Petra, Jerash, etc. They discovered a species of plant new to science, as well as bird species not in their normal range.
