Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. Herman Rosse (illustratore). This is the 1992 Reprint of "1001 Afternoons in Chicago:" by Ben Hecht, with wonderful pen and ink illustrations by Herman Rosse, published by the University of Chicago Press. The following is from the book's blurb : "In 1921 Ben Hecht wrote a column for the 'Chicago Daily News', which his editor called 'journalism extraordinary; journalism that invaded the realm of literature!' Hecht's collection of sixty-four of those pieces, illustrated with striking pen drawings by Herman Ross, is a timeless caricature or urban American life" Brothertown talking here : . and specifically Chicago urban life, which included all that one might expect from the jazz age : nightclubs, jazz and blues music, conspicuously eccentric persons, crowded life, back alleys, automotive dreams and craziness, big city entertainment personalities --- and looming over it all the towering skyscrapers that were championed as heralding the new American life. And, again from the blurb , said "the New York Times" : "Mr. Hecht is attempting to do for Chicago what Dickens did for London; he stands appalled before the spectacle of the streets, with their tumultuous, mysterious throngs." Further, L. S. Klepp, of "Voice Literary Supplement", is also quoted on the rear cover: " The hard-boiled audacity and wit that became Hecht's signature as Hollywood's most celebrated screen-writer are conspicuous in these vignettes. Most of them are comic and sardonic, some strike muted tragic or somber atmospheric notes . The best are timeless character sketches that have taken on an added interest as shards of social history." Hardcover. Herb Roth (illustratore). This is a 1940s reprint of a book first published in 1869. The title page reads, "Bundling : Its origin, Progress and Decline in America", by Henry Reed Stiles. (The spine's title label reads : "On Bundling'). The book is decorated with humorous wood cuts by Herb Roth, a leading illustrator. On another edition of Mr. Stile's book is the following: "Bundling was an important part of American courting life, enjoyed by all good country maids and men and blessed by all honest folk. During the nineteenth century, many elders clothed bundling in a licentious mantle, and a dark veil was drawn over the subject. Henry Reed Stiles, no believer in the theory that objectionable portions of history should be kept in the shadows, here defrocks these misconceptions and sheds light on this lost American custom and its origins." Bundling --- ahhh bundling --- 'twas a polite custom that created much wonderment and humor. Mayhaps it would be good to revive its use. Peruse this quaint volume and see if, perchance, thou wouldest deign to have it revived. The text includes a history and a collection of humorous verse, which are both for and against bundling. And I must add - Mr. Stiles does not restrict himself to early American courting , but touches on the premarital activities of a number of foreign cultures around the world. Condizione: VERY GOOD. First printing. A book presumably published for young adults by this author, who was also an editor and columnist, a producer of numerous motion pictures. a lecturer and more. Graphically written it begins with a brutal scene of a small band of wild horses killed simply for their hides - the sole surviver was a young colt, grazed on the neck by a bullet - hence his name later on a stallion. Notable for the illustrations by Herbert Stoops, who was known for his old West drawings and especially his pictures of horses which capture their power and beauty. Includes a sepia frontispiece, 5 full page black line drawings, and several small vignettes. Small format, just 6 3/4 in by 5 inches. 92 pp. Orange and white illustrated endpapers. Very good in orange cloth with dark green lettering and a small illustration of the head of a horse in the lower right hand corner (minor soiling to the covers, but overall a clean and sturdy copy).
