Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Herb Roth (illustratore). This is a 1940s reprint of a book first published in 1869. The title page reads, "Bundling : Its origin, Progress and Decline in America", by Henry Reed Stiles. (The spine's title label reads : "On Bundling'). The book is decorated with humorous wood cuts by Herb Roth, a leading illustrator. On another edition of Mr. Stile's book is the following: "Bundling was an important part of American courting life, enjoyed by all good country maids and men and blessed by all honest folk. During the nineteenth century, many elders clothed bundling in a licentious mantle, and a dark veil was drawn over the subject. Henry Reed Stiles, no believer in the theory that objectionable portions of history should be kept in the shadows, here defrocks these misconceptions and sheds light on this lost American custom and its origins." Bundling --- ahhh bundling --- 'twas a polite custom that created much wonderment and humor. Mayhaps it would be good to revive its use. Peruse this quaint volume and see if, perchance, thou wouldest deign to have it revived. The text includes a history and a collection of humorous verse, which are both for and against bundling. And I must add - Mr. Stiles does not restrict himself to early American courting , but touches on the premarital activities of a number of foreign cultures around the world. TITLE : Bundling : Its origin, Progress and Decline in America ( Spine label reads : "On Bundling") AUTHOR : Henry Reed Stiles (1832 - 1909) ILLUSTRATOR : Herb Roth IMPRINT : Peter Pauper Press PLACE : Mount Vernon, NY. CONDITION - VERY GOOD - This is a previously owned book which remains clean, attractive, and serviceable, with the following particulars noted : EXTERIOR : Slight dulling of spine; small split to top of front cover joint; bumps to top board corner tips, with attendant small splitting of surface paper, else clean and presentable. Lacks the slip case. BINDING : Solid -- no leaves are detached or loose. INTERIOR : The bump to the exterior corner tips has transferred to the interior leaves, causing moderate creasing to the top fore-edge corner tips throughout - else the interior is nice and clean with no writing, marking or marginalia.

Prima edizione Copia autografata
Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Poor. Herb Roth (illustratore). 1st Edition. This is an author-signed 1931 First Edition, 2nd Printing of "Tall Stories: The Rise and Triumph of the Great American Whopper" by Lowell Thomas. The book is illustrated by the very funny cartoons of the great Herb Roth which capture very aptly the silliness of the whoppers. Published by the Funk & Wagnalls Company in 1931. It's a very good copy, which includes the seldom-seen dust-jacket (The jacket is very rough in condition, being in two pieces, but we have put it into a clear mylar cover to fend off further wear.) Here is the dust-jacket's blurb : "WHOPPERS! You tell them. We all tell them. And we all laugh our heads off when we hear them. Every one knows a few tall stories. Whoppers! Grand, fantastic, improbable, impossible lies. The kind that makes the boys in the backroom holler their heads off. But there are mighty few who know how many of these ludicrous 'whoppers' there really are, and how shameless and howlingly funny they can be. There's a whole literature of them, a magnificent, uproarious collection representing the most characteristic and funniest types of indigenous American humor. And by far the most infamous of the entire lot are in this volume : 'The Hall of Fame of The Great American Whopper'. You'll enjoy reading the bare-faced, super-whoppers of the Tall Story Club - and you'll enjoy telling these 'biggest and best' whoppers - "Tall Stories" is a riot of fun!" TITLE : Tall Stories : The Rise and Triumph of the Great American Whopper AUTHOR : Lowell Thomas (1892 - 1981) ILLUSTRATOR : Herb Roth (1887 - 1953) IMPRINT : Funk & Wagnalls PLACE : New York DATE : (November 1931) EDITION : First Edition, Second Printing SPECIAL ATTRIBUTES : Signed by Author on front free end-paper DETAILS : Trade hardcover; size is 41/2" x 8 1/8"; orange cloth covered boards and spine, with black lettering and cartoon panel on spine - black lettering on front cover; contains an Index and 10 cartoon illustrations; [xii] + 245 pages. The dust-jacket is quite rough - being in two parts with considerable loss (see below) CONDITION . This is a previously owned book that remains, as regards the book itself, in clean and presentable condition. The dust-jacket is seriously defective, being in two parts and displaying considerable loss (see below for more detailed description). With the following particulars noted :: EXTERIOR - Spine extremities are compressed, and spine surface is slightly faded, although the lettering and picture on the spine display strongly. Fading and weathering display at the head of the spine and along the top edges of both covers. Text-block edges are toned, else clear. BINDING - The book has obviously been read, the leaves opening widely and easily; however the binding as a whole remains fairly solid, and no leaves are detached or loose. INTERIOR - The author, Lowell Thomas, signed his name in green ink on the front free end-paper (a striking and handsome signature). The paper, throughout (including end-papers) is lightly toned, else clean and free of marking. The cartoons display brightly. DUST-JACKET - Considerably worn, being separated into two parts : the front panel and front flap . and the rear panel and spine panel. The spine panel is lacking almost the complete bottom half and the rest (the rear panel) is missing a considerable part of the top edge; the rear panel is also torn(down from the top) and; front panel is considerably chipped and displaying loss along its edges, and displays considerable smudging and weathering. The front flap still displays the 1931 price. The jacket has served its purpose, and the remains have been enclosed in a clear mylar cover to ward off future wear. Signed by Author(s).

Frees was born in Reading, Pennsylvania, in 1879. He dressed the animals and posed them in human situations with props, often with captions; these can be seen as progenitors of modern lolcats. ; "Rabbits are the easiest to photograph in costume, but incapable of taking many 'human' parts. Puppies are tractable when rightly understood, but the kitten is the most versatile animal actor, and possesses the greatest variety of appeal." ; He used 1/5th of a second exposures and held the animals in position using stiff costuming, pins, and forks. He worked three months out of the year, since making the images was stressful. In 1937 he was working in Audubon, assisted by a housekeeper who made the animal costumes. Frees committed suicide in 1953 after being diagnosed with cancer.; FAIR. Book.
