Condizione: Very Good. Softcover, 324 pages. "Among the heretics of every age, we find men who are filled with the highest kind of religious feeling," Albert Einstein said. He might have been referring to the sixteenth-century Italian philosopher Giordano Bruno, who was tried by two Inquisitions and burned at the stake in Rome in 1600. Bruno's most representative work, Spaccio de la bestia trionfante (The Expulsion of the Triumphant Beast), published in an atmosphere of secrecy in 1584 and never referred to as anything but blasphemous for more than a century, was singled out by the church tribunal at the summation of his final trial. That is hardly surprising because the book is a daring indictment of the corruption of the social and religious institutions of his day. Clean, bright copy. Record # 386668.

Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Einband etwas berieben und beschmutzt (siehe Bild), Fußschnitt etwas angeschmutzt, sonst guter Zustand / Binding a little rubbed and soiled (see picture), foot cut a little soiled, otherwise good condition. - Among the heretics of every age, we find men who are filled with the highest kind of religious feeling, Albert Einstein said. That is hardly surprising because the book is a daring indictment of the corruption of the social and religious institutions of his day. The triumphant beast signifies the reign of multifarious vices. Cast in the form of allegorical dialogues, Brunos work presents the deliberations of the Greek gods who have assembled to banish from the heavens the constellations that remind them of their evil deeds. The crisis facing Jove, the aging father of the gods, is symbolic of the crisis in a Renaissance world profoundly disturbed by new religious, philosophical, and scientific ideas. Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Good. 1st Edition 1st Printing. 324p. A hardcover book and dustjacket in good condition. Minor wear and tear to jacket edges; front hinge a bit loose but book remains securely bound. Text clean. Giordano Bruno was a Dominican friar-turned-Calvinist and pioneer of Copernican cosmology who was burned at the stake for heresy in 1600 during the Roman Inquisition. There is a dispute as to whether Bruno's scientific or theological views were the primary impetus for his execution. This is the first English translation of Bruno's controversial text, titled "Lo spaccio de la bestia trionfante" in the original Italian. Translator Arthur Imerti's appreciation for Italian literature and Bruno's work was instilled from youth by his father, yet his academic work may have been considered particularly relevant as concerns about Catholic political and intellectual censure resurged around the 1960 election of President John F. Kennedy.
