A most fascinating and unique copy being the author's manuscript corrected copy for the second edition, printed on a thin proof paper. Presentation from Sir James to Annie Emerson, dated 1860 on verso of frontispiece & signed by Miss…Emerson on half title. At the foot of the page of part one it has proof 22/11/59 and the signature of Sir J. E. Tennent. It is heavily corrected throughout in ink. Proof copy is written at the bottom of the page throughout the work. Volume two has exactly the same presentation as volume one. The book is also signed by Arbuthnot Emerson and dated 1878. The illustrations are of poorer quality than usual being proofs and in some cases are not included just having the title in manuscript. A truly unique family copy. The book is bound in the usual full green cloth with gilt illustration on upper cover, top corners slightly bumped and some rubbing to gilt decoration and cloth. Volume one has 619pp & volume two has 660pp. Generally a very good copy. Frontispiece to both volumes and text illustrations throughout. Folding map in volume two. (illustratore). OFFERED WITH volume 37, 1808, 354pp. Both volumes are boun…d in pinkish paper-covered boards and gilt-stamped spine labels. As is usual the volume has some light scuffing to the boards and to the spines; the text is very crisp, and bright, and the bindings tight. Very GOOD condition. [++] The "Bibliotheque Britannique" provided translations of significant and important papers (mostly extracts, or reviews, though with some complete article translations) that were written primarily in English and then translated into French to reach a wider audience in Europe. Many of these translations were the first exposure to the papers on the Continent. Many of the leading lights were published here including Jenner, Davy, Thomson, Wollaston, Waterhouse, Gay-Lussac, Pictet, and many others. The journal was active 1796-1815 after which it changed direction somewhat and renamed "Bibliotheque Universelle". "General Remarks, etc. Remarques generales sur les vents, l'etat de l'atmosphere, etc." which I take to be a translation of Dunbar's 1809 paper "Meteorological Observations, at the Forest, Four Miles East of the River Mississippi, in Lat. 31 degrees 28 minutes North, and in Long. 91 degrees 30 minutes West of Greenwich, for the Year 1800" appearing originally in "Transactions of the American Philosophical Society," Vol. 6 (1809), pp. 43-55 (13 pages), this paper being pp 101-115. DREE, [Étienne-Marie-Gilbert, Marquis de Drée (17601848)] "Recherche Experimentale sur un nouveau genre de liquifaction Ignee, qui explique la formation des laves lithoides." ("Memoir on a new type of igneous liquefaction that explains the formation of stony lavas"). This paper appears on pp 3-30, and outlines Dree's experiments with lava (!) Of other interest there is a paper by A.M. Vassalli-Eandi on an eathquake in the valleys of the Pelis, Cluson, and Po, pp 116-143.
