single sheet, folded once. Incline Press (illustratore). 4to. single sheet, folded once. (4) pages. NOTE: THIS IS FOR THE PROSPECTUS ONLY. A fine copy. The original book was limited to 325 copies in this edition, signed by the author. The typographer and designer Elisabeth Friedlander (née Friedländer) designed the typeface Elisabeth for Bauer and is also known for her Monotype and Linotype ornaments, and her patterns for Curwen papers. Born to a cultured German Jewish family in 1903, she studied design and typography with E.R. Weiss, and later did calligraphy for the Ullstein journal "Die Dame," in addition to the Bauer commission. Politics forced her to leave Germany for Italy in 1936, where she worked for Mondadori and Editoriale Domus, but Mussolini's Italy was no long-term haven, and in 1939 Friedlander came to England, where she became a successful free-lance designer after the war, producing calligraphy, bookplate and masthead designs, devices, ornaments, and pattern paper designs for the Curwen Press. This biography of Elisabeth Friedlander, based on her own work books, letters, various documents, and the testimony of friends and acquaintances, includes eighty plates and an additional twenty-three illustrations of her work in the text. Some items illustrated are reproductions of calligraphy from Die Dame specimens of Elisabeth type, settings of Monotype and Linotype borders by her, reproductions of work done for Mondadori and later for Penguin, fifteen paper patterns for Curwen, examples of freelance and agency advertising work, etc.
