Sympathiek is dat de kerkvader steeds pleit voor traditie en goed gebruik, meer dan voor strikte toepassing van regeltjes. Veel rijtjes klinken vertrouwd, maar er zijn ook opmerkelijke verschillen. Zo is de verdeling van de nomina niet volgens 'declinaties' maar volgens 'grammaticaal geslacht'. Zoals steeds blijkt ook hier Augustinus' zorg voor de taal en zijn scherpe, analytische geest.
