Recent is aangetoond dat dit leerboek in hoofdzaak echt van Augustinus' hand is. Dat blijkt uit een aantal idee n over taal, woordelijke parallellen, en typisch Noord- Afrikaanse details. Het boek dateert uit de jaren voor Augustinus' doop in 387. Het is bedoeld als een opstapje voor spirituele studies en als een naslagwerk voor Afrikaanse Latijn-schrijvers. Sympathiek is dat de kerkvader steeds pleit voor traditie en goed gebruik, meer dan voor strikte toepassing van regeltjes. Veel rijtjes klinken vertrouwd, maar er zijn ook opmerkelijke verschillen.
