Einband papierbedingt gebräunt. - This report is part of an investigation concerning conditions of persons in receipt of public assistance in Stockholm, and of the causes of their predicament. Since it is of significance in the definition of the problem, as well as in the collection of material for the present sickness survey, a short account will be given here of how that investigation was built up. A number of questions have been studied. In what way and to what extent, for instance, do paupers differ from the general population in social, somatic and psychic respects? What are the direct causes for certain persons-even in periods of full employment-regularly requiring economic assistance from society? What was the course of events leading to their impoverishment? How do poverty and the relief situation affect the individual? And how shall one set about the practical task of preventing the relief situation from arising, and, if possible, of helping persons on relief to regain the ability to earn a living? An important question has been the significance of illness in the relief situation. One would expect that elderly persons, the mentally or physically sick, and weak or deformed individuals would predominate among paupers. This is in itself fairly obvious, and special investigations on this point would hardly seem necessary; as will be shown later, it is principally such persons who are entitled to relief. It is of interest, however, to know the extent of morbidity among paupers, and which diseases are primarily involved. Prolonged and disabling illnesses would be expected to predominate.
