Angesichts der verschiedenen Donatoren ist die Geschlossenheit der Sammlung höchst beeindruckend. Die unterschiedlichen Einzelsammlungen und die Erwerbungen des Museums fügen sich perfekt zu einer Erzählung der Moderne, in der kein wichtiges Kapitel fehlt. Es gibt nicht viele Sammlungen dieser Art, die sich dem Engagement zahlreicher Bürger verdanken und doch wie von einer Person ausgewählt scheinen. Rund 250 Werke von 96 Künstlern sind in der Ausstellung zu sehen, überwiegend Gemälde, aber auch Zeichnungen und Skulpturen. Ein Projekt dieses Umfangs ist sehr ungewöhnlich. Als die Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle der Bundesrepublik Deutschland im Jahr 1992-Meisterwerke aus dem New Yorker Museum of Modern Art präsentierte und damit ihre Ausstellungsreihe "Die großen Sammlungen" eröffnete, wartete sie mit 70 Leihgaben auf. Bei der großen Guggenheim-Ausstellung, die 2006 stattfand, waren es 200. Nur die Ausstellung zum Moderna Museet Stockholm, 1996, dessen Sammlung ebenfalls wegen Baumaßnahmen zur Verfügung stand, war ähnlich umfangreich. Das Kunstmuseum Winterthur setzt mit seiner großzügigen Leihbereitschaft einen besonderen Glanzpunkt in dieser illustren Ausstellungsreihe von Sammlungen moderner Kunst. Von Bonn aus reist die Ausstellung nach Rovereto, wo sie im Museo di Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Trento e Rovereto, kurz M ART genannt, gezeigt wird. Das von Mario Botta entworfene Museum öffnete 2002 seine Pforten und zählt heute in Oberitalien zu den führenden Häusern für die Kunst der Moderne und der Gegenwart.
