From the publisher: "In THE DARK SIDE OF MAN, Michael Ghiglieri, a biologist and protà gà of Jane Goodall, takes on one of the most highly charged debates in modern science: the biological roots of bad behavior. Beginning with rape, and moving on to murder, war, and genocide, Ghiglieri offers the most up-to-date, comprehensive look at the male proclivity for violence. In a strong narrative voice, he draws on the latest research and his own personal experiences both as a primatologist and as a soldier to explain that male violence is largely innate, a product of millions of years of evolution. In the process, he debunks many of our most clung-to, politically correct notions: that the differences between men and women are strictly due to socialization, that rape is really about power not sex and that genocide is only possible with a single madman at the helm. Well-argued, evenhanded, yet never dull, this important book illuminates the darkest impulses of the male psyche, and suggests ways for modern society to curb them.". "A fascinating study of NewlandÂ's complex professional and personal life." -- Nebraska History. "Unquestionably, serious students of the American West should read this meticulously researched and well-written biography." -- The Journal of Arizona History. ". very well researched." -- American Historical Review. ". an engaging, enjoyable portrait of a fascinating character. " -- Water Resources Bulletin. "Through his narrative of NewlandsÂ' life, the author presents a clear and vivid sense of the political battles that led to federal dams and other water reclamation projects in the West. By reclaiming Newlands from the obscurity of history, Professor Rowley provides perspective on our present day battles." -- State Environmental Monitor. ". skillfully blends the local and national, and it portrays Newlands with sensitivity and sound critical judgement." -- Agricultural History. ". a valuable addition to the field and will be enjoyable reading for historians interested in the American West or natural resource management." -- Journal of American History. This biography of Francis Newlands, a key figure in the irrigation of the West and an architect of the modern regulatory state at the beginning of this century, reveals a complicated and sophisticated man who successfully lived a dual political life under a cloud of personal and public scandal." Here is more about: All the Water the Law Allows: "As the population of the greater Las Vegas area grows and the climate warms, the threat of a water shortage looms over southern Nevada. But as Christian S. Harrison demonstrates in All the Water the Law Allows, the threat of shortage arises not from the local environment but from the American legal system, specifically the Law of the River that governs water allocation from the Colorado River. In this political and legal history of the Las Vegas water supply, Harrison focuses on the creation and actions of the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) to tell a story with profound implications and important lessons for water politics and natural resource policy in the twenty-first century. In the state with the smallest allocation of the ColoradoÂ's water supply, Las Vegas faces the twin challenges of aridity and federal law to obtain water for its ever-expanding population. All the Water the Law Allows describes how the impending threat of shortage in the 1980s compelled the five metropolitan water agencies of greater Las Vegas to unify into a single entity. Harrison relates the circumstances of the SNWAÂ's evolution and reveals how the unification of local, county, and state interests allowed the compact to address regional water policy with greater force and focus than any of its peers in the Colorado River Basin. Most notably, the SNWA has mapped conservation plans that have drastically reduced local water consumption; and, in the interstate realm, it has been at the center of groundbreaking, water-sharing agreements.". INSCRIBED / SIGNED by the AUTHOR, directly on the half title page. The insciption is to longtime advertising executive Ed Felesky (for more, see below). Near Fine condition in a Good+ dust jacket (bright and shiny but with short closed tears to the rear panel that are clear tape reinforced on the jacket's blank side). NOT price clipped ($18.95). NOT a remainder. Sharp corners. Pages are clean and unmarked. 1986. First printing with "First Edition" so stated on the copyright page. Full color frontispiece. Bound in the original brown cloth, stamped in bright gold on the spine. From the dust jacket: "Compelling and informative, this novel is the story of a cattle ranch and its people in the Nevada wilderness long before the glitter of the state's gaming era. It focuses on the loves and hates, the triumphs and tragedies, of the Norman family from covered-wagon days to the Great Depression of the present [i.e. 20th] century. The patriarch of this family is Arthur Norman, a giant of a man whose vision of life helped tame a violent and lawless frontier. His love for his family and friends, his lands, his cattle and his horses was so strong that the shadow of his life hovered over his descendants in a lasting legacy. The story covers the gamut of human passions as the characters contend with each other, their harsh environment, and the historical events that brought the Old West into the mainstream of an evolving American culture. The discovery of gold in California, the emigrants, Indian disturbances, cattle drives, the Civil War, the first railroad, World War I, the Great Depression -- these are all here, woven into the lives of a family that developed a cattle kingdom where Indians and white men lived in peaceful coexistence despite the prejudices of their time. For those with a fascination for the history of the Old West or anyone who enjoys adventure and romance, THE TREBLE V: THE LEGACY OF A CATTLE BARON OF THE OLD WEST is a thrilling book." This book is author inscribed to Ed Felesky who served as a B-24 co-pilot in the 376th Heavy Bombardment Group, which flew missions over North Africa and Italy and earned a presidential citation. Felesky came to Las Vegas in 1969, a seasoned advertising executive from New York City whose clients included the Wall Street Journal, Proctor & Gamble, Revlon, RCA, 20th Century Fox, United Artists, and Seagrams. It was Felesky, a former longtime partner at Joyce & Associates Advertising, who created the "Dusty Mac" logo for McCarran International Airport's expansion [the image of a gold miner that appears wherever there is construction at the airport]. He and his wife, attorney Marilyn Romanelli, moved to Las Vegas in 1969, where she became a prominent family law attorney and served as Nevada's deputy attorney general in the early 1970s. From his New York Times obituary (May 19, 2021): "David Wake, an evolutionary biologist and a pre-eminent authority on salamanders who raised an alarm in the 1980s about the loss of amphibians to climate change A longtime professor of integrative biology at the University of California, Berkeley, Dr. Wake used salamanders as vehicles to study how animals diversify and develop new species over millions of years. His focus was a family of species of lungless salamander called plethodontids Dr. Wake named 144 salamander species, some of which he discovered, on his own or with colleagues. One, Nototriton wakei, was named for him. Two lizards and a frog also bear his name Dr. Wake's research expeditions took him to the Appalachians, the Pacific Northwest, Costa Rica and Guatemala as well as areas of California. But in the 1980s, he realized that a species of salamander that he had found to be plentiful in Mexico a decade earlier had become difficult to find. Other herpetologists had by then had similar experiences of amphibian scarcity." Fine condition in a Near Very Good dust jacket (a few short, closed edge tears). Moffett, 'the Indiana Jones of entomology,' takes us around the globe on a strange and colorful journey in search of the hidden world of ants. In tales from Nigeria, Indonesia, the Amazon, Australia, California, and elsewhere, Moffett recounts his entomological exploits and provides fascinating details on how ants live and how they dominate their ecosystems through strikingly human behaviors, yet at a different scale and a faster tempo. Moffett's spectacular close-up photographs shrink us down to size, so that we can observe ants in familiar roles; warriors, builders, big-game hunters, and slave owners. We find them creating marketplaces and assembly lines and dealing with issues we think of as uniquely human -- including hygiene, recycling, and warfare. ADVENTURES AMONG ANTS introduces some of the world's most awe-inspiring species and offers a startling new perspective on the limits of our own perception: Ants are world-class road builders, handling complex traffic problems on thoroughfares that dwarf our highway systems; Ants take slaves from conquered armies and create societies dependent on their labor; Ants with the largest societies often deploy complex military tactics; Some ants have evolved from hunter-gatherers into farmers, domesticating other animals and growing specific crops for food.". Bound in the original pale gray boards with a silver-stamped black cloth spine. From the publisher: "A comprehensive anthology bringing together more than one thousand of the best American and English song lyrics of the twentieth century; an extraordinary celebration of a unique art form and an indispensable reference work and history that celebrates one of the twentieth century's most enduring and cherished legacies. READING LYRICS begins with the first masters of the colloquial phrase, including George M. Cohan (Give My Regards to Broadway), P. G. Wodehouse (Till the Clouds Roll By), and Irving Berlin, whose versatility and career span the period from Alexander's Ragtime Band to Annie Get Your Gun and beyond. The Broadway musical emerges as a distinct dramatic form in the 1920s and 1930s, its evolution propelled by a trio of lyricists -- Cole Porter, Ira Gershwin, and Lorenz Hart -- whose explorations of the psychological and emotional nuances of falling in and out of love have lost none of their wit and sophistication. Their songs, including Night and Day, The Man I Love, and Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered, have become standards performed and recorded by generation after generation of singers. The lure of Broadway and Hollywood and the performing genius of such artists as Al Jolson, Fred Astaire, Ethel Waters, Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, and Ethel Merman inspired a remarkable array of talented writers, including Dorothy Fields (A Fine Romance, I Can't Give You Anything but Love), Frank Loesser (Guys and Dolls), Oscar Hammerstein II (from the groundbreaking Show Boat of 1927 through his extraordinary collaboration with Richard Rodgers), Johnny Mercer, Yip Harburg, Andy Razaf, Noël Coward, and Stephen Sondheim. READING LYRICS also celebrates the work of dozens of superb craftsmen whose songs remain known, but who today are themselves less known -- writers like Haven Gillespie (whose Santa Claus Is Coming to Town may be the most widely recorded song of its era); Herman Hupfeld (not only the composer/lyricist of As Time Goes By but also of Are You Makin' Any Money? and When Yuba Plays the Rumba on the Tuba); the great light versifier Ogden Nash (Speak Low, I'm a Stranger Here Myself, and, yes, The Sea-Gull and the Ea-Gull); Don Raye (Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, Mister Five by Five, and, of course, Milkman, Keep Those Bottles Quiet); Bobby Troup (Route 66); Billy Strayhorn (not only for the omnipresent Lush Life but for Something to Live For and A Lonely Coed); Peggy Lee (not only a superb singer but also an original and appealing lyricist); and the unique Dave Frishberg (I'm Hip, Peel Me a Grape, Van Lingo Mungo). The lyricists are presented chronologically, each introduced by a succinct biography and the incisive commentary of Robert Gottlieb and Robert Kimball.". INSCRIBED / SIGNED by the AUTHOR. Hardcover. Condizione: Good. 2nd Edition. xxix+281 pages with diagrams. Octavo (8 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine with blind-stamped chess boards to covers. Inscribed by Capablanca on front end paper. from the library of David DeLucia with a typed manuscript referencing the first edition of this work with Capablanca's hand written correction. (Betts: 10-136) Second American edition. This work is in two parts. In part one the author gives basic instruction, first very briefly, the covering the same points in more detail. In part two he deals with endings, the middle-game, openings, in that order. This was published in London by Bell in the same year. Jose Raul Capablanca y Graupera (19 November 1888-8 March 1942) was a Cuban chess player who was world chess champion from 1921 to 1927. A chess prodigy, he is considered by many as one of the greatest players of all time, widely renowned for his exceptional endgame skill and speed of play. Born in Havana, he beat Cuban champion Juan Corzo in a match two days before his thirteenth birthday on 17 November 1901. His victory over Frank Marshall in a match in 1909 earned him an invitation to the 1911 San Sebastian tournament, which he won ahead of players such as Akiba Rubinstein, Aron Nimzowitsch and Siegbert Tarrasch. During the next several years, Capablanca had a strong series of tournament results. After several unsuccessful attempts to arrange a match with the then world champion Emanuel Lasker, Capablanca finally won the title from Lasker in 1921. Capablanca was undefeated for eight years from 10 February 1916 to 21 March 1924, a period which included the world championship match with Lasker. Capablanca lost the title in 1927 to Alexander Alekhine, who had never beaten Capablanca before the match. Following unsuccessful attempts to arrange a return match over many years, relations between them became bitter. Capablanca continued his excellent tournament results in this period but withdrew from serious chess in 1931. He made a comeback in 1934, with some good results, but also showed symptoms of high blood pressure. He died in 1942 of "a cerebral hemorrhage provoked by hypertension". (Wikipieda) David DeLucia's chess library contains 7,000 to 8,000 chess books, a similar number of autographs (letters, score sheets, manuscripts), and about 1,000 items of "ephemera". DeLucia's library contains such items as "a 15th-century Lucena manuscript, score-sheets ranging from Fischer's Game of the Century against Donald Byrne to all the games of the 1927 New York tournament, eight letters by Morphy, over a hundred Lasker manuscripts, Capablanca's gold pocket watch, [and] the contract of the 1886 Steinitz-Zukertort world championship match". Typed manuscript sent by an unknown author to Capablanca regarding errors in the first edition of A Primer of Chess with corrections in Capablanca's hand. Condition: Inscribed by Capablanca on front end paper. Binding with visible wear and scratches. Corners bumped. Some shelf lean. Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine condition. NOT a library discard (illustratore). True First Edition. Privately Published, 2018. INSCRIBED to the AUTHOR'S MOTHER and SIGNED by him. The inscription reads, in part: "Mom. Hope you enjoy this (it) started as an outline, and just continued to grow with my progress and a TON of love and support along the way. Thanks for your love and encouragement All my love 2018 (signed) Kyle." This is the TRUE first edition published in 2018, four years before the 2022 Ballast books edition. The author is a retired US Navy Rear Admiral and current President and CEO of the Naval Aviation Museum Foundation. Bound in the original black laminated boards, lettered in bright white, and with a full color photo on the front cover of the author hugging his mother, and with a quotation from Charles Krauthammer on the back. From the publisher of the 2022 edition: "Why me? This is what most people would wonder when suddenly faced with a life-altering hardship. Rear Admiral Kyle Cozad was no different -- at first. However, only days after a freak accident that left him largely paralyzed from the waist down, he chose to view his circumstances with unfailing optimism. That positive attitude, combined with his sheer grit and resilience, helped him do what his neurosurgeon said would be impossible: walk again. In RELENTLESS POSITIVITY Cozad chronicles his career in naval aviation, reflecting on his roles as the Navy's senior leader in the White House Situation Room during the Osama Bin Laden raid and as the commander of the Joint Task Force in Guantanamo Bay. He even relates his experience as commander of the Naval Education and Training Command when the training center suffered a terrorist attack. Then, Cozad recounts how his whole life was turned upside-down when an accident seriously damaged his spinal cord. With raw vulnerability, he describes his incredible journey of recovery and rehabilitation, focusing on the key factors that helped him along the way: his family, the U.S. Navy, and the sense of purpose he developed after his injury. Whether you have experienced a life-altering injury of your own or are simply looking for the inspiration needed to overcome a seemingly insurmountable challenge, regardless of your profession or place in your life, this book is a must-read. As Rear Admiral Kyle Cozad says, 'Life throws each one of us curveballs that we never, ever expect. It's how we adjust ourselves to overcome those curveballs that really defines who we are as individuals.'". INSCRIBED to his MOTHER. True First Edition. Hardcover. Inscribed to Professor George M Foster. Copy 244 of 1000 copies issued. First edition. A mining engineer turned ethnologist, the author has done a much needed service by studying in anthropological terms an isolated region inhabited by mestizos. As the method was extensive rather than intensive, the data are mostly in the realm of material culture and linguistics. This work covers all aspects of the area surveyed, from the geography, climate, indigenous peoples, their economics as well as the history. This includes language, the archaeology of the region and a survey of even some potential sites. A scarce work on this subject. George McClelland Foster, Jr born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on October 9, 1913, died on May 18, 2006, at his home in the hills above the campus of the University of California, Berkeley, where he served as a professor from 1953 to his retirement in 1979, when he became professor emeritus. His contributions to anthropological theory and practice still challenge us; in more than 300 publications, his writings encompass a wide diversity of topics, including acculturation, long-term fieldwork, peasant economies, pottery making, public health, social structure, symbolic systems, technological change, theories of illness and wellness, humoral medicine in Latin America, and worldview. The quantity, quality, and long-term value of his scholarly work led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976. Virtually all of his major publications have been reprinted and/or translated. Condition: Foster's stamps on front wrappers and tiles. Good condition. Paper clip mark on the title page, from attached index card written in the hand of Alonzo Church. Separata da Revista da Faculdade de Letras, de Lisboa, Tomo XIV - 2 Serie, No 3. From Wikipedia: "For Edmundo Curvelo, forty years of life and ten publications were enough to mark the history of Portuguese thought; in general, through work in the field of logic, in particular, through the endeavor to logify psychology. According to him, Psychology would only gain the status of Science to the extent that it was allowed to logify, because, for Professor Abrantes, science is a logical construction. To logify any subject is to discover the stable structures that have the language that can represent that any subject faithfully. The work he built on logic is all the more remarkable as it is known that the area of logic was not, in the history of Portuguese thought, an area of great development. Not to underline that, at the time, it was the occupation of very few. In his research area he fought the current. Professor Manuel Curado (2001) pointedly points out in the History of Portuguese Philosophical Thought that Edmundo Curvelo was the best Portuguese logician of the twentieth century and beyond: Â"For better and worse, Curvelo is the logic of the twentieth century. Portugal. Â"(Curado, 2001: 345). Whether before or after, nothing more significant is in the history of Portuguese twentieth-century logic than the work of the Alentejo teacher." This volume was among several dozen books from Alonzo Church's library that we were lucky enough to purchase at auction in New Jersey. Alonzo Church (1903 - 1995) was professor of mathematics at Princeton University (1929-1967) and of mathematics and philosophy at UCLA (1967-1990). He was the founding editor of the JOURNAL OF SYMBOLIC LOGIC. Among his most influential contributions are Church's Theorem, Church's Thesis, and the Lambda Calculus. His work was of major importance in mathematical logic, recursion theory, theoretical computer science, and functional programming languages in general. Professor Church's creation of lambda calculus was the foundation for the LISP programming language and provided the semantic model for ALGOL. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences, British Academy, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Church is regarded by many as the greatest American logician of the 20th century. [For more on Church's contributions, see items 250, 251, 321, 394, and 533 in Hook and Norman's ORIGINS OF CYBERSPACE, A LIBRARY ON THE HISTORY OF COMPUTING.]. INSCRIBED & SIGNED. 1949 edition.
