Hardcover. Condizione: Good. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Textured dark brown (gray) boards with title stamped in gold and some blindstamped decorations. Spine has been repaired (quite a long time ago) with dark green binder's tape. Title page dated 1864. Copyright page dated 1863. I can find no 1863 editions, so I believe that this is the first (and only) edition of Stone's collection of poems. 81 pages. Some mild foxing throughout. Binding tight. The front endpaper is a bit loose, however. A nice inscription on the front endpaper, "To Charles Lanman, Esq, from his friend Horatio Stone. Washington., DC Feb 6, 1865." Charles Lanman was the private secretary to Daniel Webster, a librarian and distinguished painter. Horatio Stone was a man of many talents. He was a surgeon during the Civil War, working at the Patent Office Hospital (where he befriended Walt Whitman). In addition to writing this volume of poetry, was a sculptor. He made the statues of Alexander Hamilton and John Hancock which are on display at the Capitol. He was also the founder and first president of the National Art Association. The date of the publication of this book and the inscription are poignant. It all took place in the brief window when the end of the Civil War was in sight, but before the assassination of Lincoln. The February, 1865, inscription on a book of poems called "Freedom" -- just two weeks after the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment & while Lincoln was discussing terms of peace with the Vice President of the Confederacy aboard the River Queen -- is a golden moment in time. Lincoln was assassinated two months later. Please email with questions or to request photos. Signed by Author(s).
