Hardcover. Condizione: Near fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very good. First thus. Near fine/Very good. Everybody loves "The Wind in the Willows" and everybody has their favorite edition, probably the one they first discovered as a child. Nonetheless, this Heritage Press edition would still make a welcome addition to your shelf,… whether you are a collector of classic children's literature or simply nostalgic. The stories are all about Mole, Rat, Badger, Toad, and other riverbank and forest creatures "messing about in boats" (as Rattie puts it), as well as the wealthy, egocentric Toad's misadventures on land with newfangled automobiles and the law, and more. Yet as human as these critters who walk upright and wear clothes and speak English may be, it's also a quite "green" book at heart. Grahame's love of nature is passionate and undeniable and the reality of it comes through in moments like the discomfort our Mole feels traipsing through the forest at night when the owls are out, or how our friends discreetly turn their heads when a diving bird suddenly breaks off a conversation to go after a fish in the river. The tone ranges from the eminently practical (what's the best way to pack a picnic basket?) to the mystical (the god Pan makes an appearance), arranged in successive interlocking chapters that are still so discrete that several have been published as individual books. It makes for great read-aloud material, and one can sense the book's origin as bedtime stories for Grahame made up for his frail son. However, this edition is especially delicious for anyone old enough to hold and read the book themselves because of the illustrations. Oh, the illustrations! This was the last work Arthur Rackham, one of the greats of book illustration, completed before his death and released posthumously. It includes twelve full-page color plates reproducing his typically complicated watercolors, as well as black ink drawings, typically half a page in size, heading each chapter. It gets underway with an introduction by A.A. Milne, the creator of another set of fictional animal friends, Winnie the Pooh and his crew. If that's not an endorsement, what is? Our copy was published by The Heritage Press, but details of release date, edition, and print runs tend to be contradictory with even the best of information available from respected dealers and collectors, academic sources, and the item itself. The copyright page within the book itself says, in full: "The Wind in the Willows was originally published in the United States of America by Charles Scribner's Sons; and was copyright, 1908, 1913, 1933, and 1935 by that company. Special permission has been obtained for the publication of this edition by The Limited Editions Club; and the special contents of this edition are copyright 1940, by The Limited Editions Club, Inc." Both The Limited Editions Club and The Heritage Press were founded by George Macy, and The Heritage Press was meant to make the fine books published for subscribers to The Limited Editions Club more affordable and accessible to the public. The title page has no date but states the copy was part of The Heritage Illustrated Bookshelf, a Heritage Press imprint aimed at younger buyers. Bound in dark blue cloth and in excellent condition, with no bumping or other flaws to the boards; very light light rubbing at the edges. A large reproduction of one of Rackham's illustrations of Toad stamped in still-bright gold graces the front cover, and the title is stamped in bright gold on the spine. All is tight and square. All three edges of the text block are stained red, with the top edge slightly faded. One small brown stain close to the spine. No marks, tears, or other flaws to the pages themselves. A tag for the esteemed Holliday Bookshop in New York is attached to the inside back cover, at the bottom edge, next to the spine. The dust jacket survives with considerable wear. Some wear and soiling particularly at the spine. The top of the spine is chipped to a 1/8-inch depth, and a one-inch tear at the bottom of the fold where the front panel meets the front flap. Other small tears and chipping. A laid-in business reply postcard for the Heritage Press mailing list is included. Photos are forthcoming or available upon request. Rackham, Arthur (illustratore).

Condizione: Near fine. First Edition. Signed limited first Rackham edition, one of 2020 copies signed by fine press book designer Bruce Rogers. The distinctly English atmosphere of this classic bucolic tale notwithstanding, this edition was first published in the United States and not published in England until 1950. The stories of timid Mole, practical Rat, wise Badger, and intemperate Mr. Toad remain excellent bedtime reading. A beautiful gift edition. 11.25'' x 8''. Original quarter tan cloth, orange patterned boards. In original green slipcase. Top edge gilt, other edges uncut. Illustrated by Rackham with 16 magnificent mounted color plates. 245, [1] pages.
