Hardbound. Yellowish brown cloth with applied leather label to spine. T.e.g. 336 pp with 14 coloured plates and 23 pen-and-ink drawings by Edoardo Rubino and 11 photographs. An early and engaging account of earlier attempts to ascend the beast, and the author's own experiences. Good overall, exlibrary copy with plate, pocket and small letters at base of spine, leather label is faded. All plates present, but some have worked loose, resulting in chipping and loss the their extremities (but no image loss) No stamps to plates, inner front hinge could use tightening.

Illustrated with 14 tissue-guarded colour plates by Eduardo Rubino as well as 34 black and white photographic and illustration plates. A very good copy, the binding square and firm, the corners lightly bumped, the cloth with a 1.5 cm split and some fraying at the head of the spine and scattered marks across the upper board and spine. The contents, with offsetting to the endpapers, are otherwise clean throughout and without stamps or inscriptions. The Italian mountaineer and photographer Guido Rey's writings on early attempts at climbing The Matterhorn, including his own. With an introduction by the Italian novelist, poet, author of popular travel books and children's stories Edmondo De Amicis (1846 - 1908).
