Aggiungi al carrelloHardback. Condizione: Very Good. Presumed First Edition Ths. No stated date c1935. Presumed first edition thus. 56pp., 4 two-tone full-page illustrations by Margaret Rorie Caird (1896-1961), an illustration on the title-page, illustration on the reverse of the half-title page, and border decorations to the text. All edges gilt.…The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám is the title that Edward FitzGerald gave to his 1859 translation from Persian to English of a selection of quatrains (rubaiyat) attributed to Omar Khayyam (1048-1131), dubbed "the Astronomer-Poet of Persia". FitzGerald's work has been published in several hundred editions and has inspired similar translation efforts in English, Hindi and in many other languages. The present edition includes an introduction by Laurence E. Housman. The book is bound in the original thin full leather boards with gold titling and design on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear to the boards and rubbing to the leather on the corner tips and spine ends. The spine is faded and there is also some fading on up to about 2" of the spine edge and part of the top edge of the front board and to about 1" of the spine edge of the rear board. There is a thin split of about 3/8" to the leather on the top of the front spine edge. The contents are tight and clean and the original marker ribbon is present. There is an inscription dated June 1936 on the front free endpaper. Margaret R. Caird (illustratore).

Aggiungi al carrelloFirst edition. 24 pages of titles, Preface, Introduction and Contents, then 381 pages + 3 of ads, an illustrated frontispiece and a further 6 black and white illustrated plates. Publisher's review copy, stamped as such to the title page, the reviewer was militant suffragette, W.S.P.U. member and fellow author, Evelyn Sharp, with… her ownership inscription in ink to the front endpaper dated 1917, and passages to the text highlighted in pencil. The book is quite firmly bound in the publisher's green cloth, lettered in faded white to the spine, the cloth is slightly marked and rubbed, the spine is sunned and the extremities are bumped. The text block is age toned, slightly marked and dusty, with a few dog-eared page corners and slight cracking at points. The first of three works by Metcalfe, herself an active suffragist, on the question of women's suffrage, this a history which becomes increasingly detailed during the period of which Metcalfe has first-hand knowledge, with particular emphasis on the activities of the militant suffragettes. This, a superb association copy, originally owned by one of the more famous suffragettes.
