Soft cover. Condizione: As New. This copy feels unread. Drawing on extensive interviews with members of seven Māori-Chinese families, Manying Ip explores a little-known aspect of New Zealand's social history: the relationships, intermarriage and shared experiences of Māori and Chinese communities from the nineteenth century to t…he present. Combining oral histories with archival research, the book examines how both groups, often marginalised within wider society, forged enduring family and community connections while negotiating questions of identity, culture and belonging. Through deeply personal narratives, Being Māori-Chinese.

Soft cover. Condizione: Near Fine. This copy feels unread. The only book that comprehensively covers the fortunes of Chinese immigrants in New Zealand from the earliest encounters in the mid-1800s, to the present day (including transnationalism) offering valuable data and expert viewpoints for international study and comparision…. A timely book that will strike chords with the Chinese communiities in Australia, Canada and the United states, because of the strikingly similar expieriences of members of those communities at the hands of colonial governments and sometimes xenophobic societies.

Paper Covers. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. Advance copy with review sticker inside front cover. Cover has minor creasing and a couple of spots. Contents clean and tight with no inscriptions. 168pp. This book sets out to provoke a radical rethinking of some of the deep-seated and subconscious attitudes towards… 'Asians' and Asia held by many New Zealanders, as reflected in cartoons of the past 140 years. Cartoons are powerful visual images which have an immediacy greater than that of words. Many New Zealanders are now grappling with understanding the issues behind 'bad Asian drivers', 'rising property prices', 'student criminals'. These issues go back 150 years to the arrival of the first Chinese, towards the end of the Gold Rushes. Our attitude to Asians as the essential outsider has undergone little change since then. New Asian immigrants cannot understand our prejudice, or where it comes from. Using political cartoons, this book examines New Zealanders' attitudes to Asians from the 1850s until the present day. The cartoons are arranged thematically and chronologically, accompanied by explanatory text. Each chapter has an introductory preface, with a major preface.
