Limp leather album. 198 pages with 325 gelatin silver photographs adhesive mounted, and an additional 32 laid in. Of the images 62 are panoramas, measuring around 3¼" x 11½"; the rest measure between 2" x 2" to 3¼" x 4½", with some captioned. Album good with n…early all leather perished, many leaves with chips, the edges are fragile, with about 12 leaves detached. The majority of photos are very good or better, a few with heavy silvering. An outstanding early 20th Century album documenting a wealthy family's trips, as well as the spread of amateur panoramic photography. The album was likely compiled by Irene Sherman (later Irene Sherman Gillespie) of Newport, Rhode Island (her name is written on the verso of the front cover), a noted Newport socialite. The first third of the album is devoted to a trip to France. There are shots of Cannes, St. Martin, Cagnes-sur-Mer, the old city streets of St. Paul De Vence, and the ruins at Frejus. The last two-thirds of the album is set in the American West, bounteous with desert and mountain scenery. There are many images of Southern California including many of homes, farmland, and other rural areas. There are several shots of the beach and a few of an ostrich farm. The highlight of the album is a 38-shot series showing the 1903 Rose Parade along South Raymond Avenue in Pasadena. Several of these show the streets lined with flags, others show floats, Native Americans, and one includes a street merchant hawking parade relics. The 62 panoramas are divided about equally between France and the United States (there are a few taken in and around Washington, DC). and consist of harbors, mountains, shoreline and towns, many are quite striking. The first mass produced American panoramic camera came to market in 1898 making these reasonably early examples of the technology as used by amateurs. Even the more mundane landscape shots are made interesting by the much wider view depicted. An interesting travel album featuring early amateur usage of panoramic technology with a particular wealth of turn-of-the-century downtown Pasadena photographs.

Through her father, she was a descendant of Nicholas Brown Sr., brother of John Brown, Moses Brown, and Joseph Brown, all merchants who were active in Rhode Island politics and who brought the College of Rhode Island to Providence in 1771.
