Weltkrieg möglich. In der Einleitung äußert sich Irving folgendermaßen: "Zweierlei war meine Absicht: Einen Abriß der Geschichte des Bergsteigens zu schreiben, und die Rolle zu schildern, die der Mensch in den Bergen gespielt hat".
