Hardcover. Condizione: Very good +. First Edition. Tall octavo, 512pp., illustrated. A sharp, square, very good or better copy in the publisher's green rough-grain cloth. Bottom corners gently bumped, and some foxing to the numerous steel engravings, but an otherwise nice, clean copy. A unique example, which bears the wonderful label of one Joseph Woodroffe of St. Clairsville, Ohio on the front paste-down. The label indicates that Woodroffe was the "Belmont, Guernsey, and Harrison County Agent for Randall's Practical Shepherd. Belmont County Agent for Solon Robinson's Facts for Farmers and the Family Circle, Greeley's American Conflict, Civtors's History of American Conspiracies, from 1760 to 1860, Victor's History of the Southern Rebellion, Pittenger's Daring and Suffering, Geer's Beyond the Lines, Steel Plate Portraits of Gens. Grant, Sherman and all other prominent men. All the publications and Books of the M. E. Church, Family Bibles, Commentaries, or any good book furnished at Publisher's prices and terms. GOOD AGENTS are wanted to canvass and supply each Township with the above name and other good works." The label measures about 3 5/8" x 6", though it was cut unevenly. The text is printed in (we count) eleven typefaces, and bears a handsome, but modest border. Rudimentary internet sleuthing suggests that Woodroffe was a Methodist Episcopal preacher, in addition to his side gig of bookselling. Based on the final appeal on his label, it seems he ran a network of local agents within an area of several counties in rural east-central Ohio, at the western foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. A wonderful document of rural Ohio bookselling history, paired with one of the most popular biographies published at the close of the Civil War.
