An extremely scarce work, with only one copy cited as being held institutionally by Worldcat. Comprising two tales, 'The Memoirs of a Villain' and 'Anecdotes of a Miscreant'. This humorous and anecdotal work of…fiction is written by Isaac Crookenden. Crookenden wrote many works including 'Berthinia or The Fair Spaniard' and 'The Skeleton'. He worked for four publishers and produced many chapbooks. Collated using copy from Worldcat, it seems this work is lacking the frontispiece. Undated, dated using colophon. Disbound, as issued. A charming picaresque chapbook. Disbound, as issued. Externally, generally smart. Final leaf is detached but present. A few spots and marks to the front and rear leaves. Published initially as a chapbook. Old hand notation on front fly. Filleted leather spine remains. Offsetting from frontis on verso. Light toning at edges with some soiling in the margins. Light age staining throughout. Last leaf has old hand a small instance of old hand marginalia at left edge. Small ink stain and tear at bottom right corner of last leaf. Free of other known markings. Please see photos. Scarce "Shilling Shocker" aka the precursor to the Penny Dreadful! Shilling Shockers were highly sensationalized "true" crime, often false accounts, of gruesome murders. They were often quite expensive initially, only to be afforded by the incredibly wealthy Georgian era elites. Gradually over time they became cheaper and easier to obtain thanks to lower printing standards.
