He is also known as the "Hero of the Two Worlds" for his contributions to the Ragamuffin War in Brazil (1835-45) and the Uruguayan Civil War (1839-51) during his 14 years of exile in South America. Today, Garibaldi remains a symbol for the fight for national independence and republican ideals all around the world as well as Italy's greatest national hero.
