Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. 'A rare and beautiful book' TLS'Original and stimulating' Irish TimesInto the world of 1950s Ireland - a lushly green, windswept landscape studded with holy wells and the decaying country houses of a vanished ruling class - arrives Ithell Colquhoun. An occultist and a surrealist painter, Colquhoun's travels around the island are guided by her artist's eye and her feeling for the world beyond our own, as well as her spikily humorous view of the people she meets. We encounter faeries and pagan rituals, ruined churches and Celtic splendour, rowdy bohemians and Anglo-Irish landowners fallen on hard times, as the author carouses through Dublin and tramps the hills of Connemara in this classic travelogue.Richly visual and full of sly wit, this is an account of Ireland as only Colquhoun could see it, a land where myth and magic meet wind and rain, and the song of the secret kingdom is heard on city streets.Part of the Pushkin Press Classics series: timeless storytelling by icons of literature, hand-picked from around the globe.Ithell Colquhoun (1906-1988) was born in British India and brought up in the United Kingdom. She studied at the Slade School of Fine Art and started exhibiting her paintings in the 1930s, gaining some renown as one of the few women associated with British Surrealism. She began visiting Cornwall during the Second World War, and eventually moved there, continuing to write, paint, and pursue the study of the occult until her death. As well as The Crying of the Wind: Ireland, she is the author of The Living Stones: Cornwall and the novel Goose of Hermogenes, also available from Pushkin Press.

"Straddling the worlds of Surrealism, occultism and modernist literature, Ithell Colquhoun was widely respected in her lifetime, but her transgressive, esoteric and poetic paintings and writings were long neglected until recent years. This volume is the first critical examination of her diverse legacy, compiling papers from a 2018 conference on Colquhoun and her contemporaries Leonora Carrington, Leonor Fini and Stella Snead. Colquhoun occupies a unique place within the lineage of occult Surrealist painters such as Leonora Carrington and Remedios Varo, as her presence in the 2022 Venice Biennale exhibition Milk of Dreams demonstrated.Contributors explore themes of authorship and agency, ColquhounÂ's drawing practice, her Celtic motifs, British Surrealism and alchemy." Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: New. 1st Edition. Lopen, Somerset: Fulgur Limited, 2018. NEW in Publisher Shrink-wrap. Limited to 300 copies only of each element cover, this NEW copy is Water (Blue). From The Publisher (see image) : In 1977, a series of 78 strange enamel works were exhibited in a small gallery in Cornwall. The vibrant images were modestly grouped together in five large frames. For the curious viewer the artist provided a page of explanation, affirming that these 'psycho-morphological' studies were, in fact, designs for a Taro. Within a few weeks, the exhibition was gone. Such was the first and last appearance of Ithell Colquhoun's revolutionary explorations of the Taro As Colour. The product of a lifetime of esoteric study and art practice, Colquhoun's bold project seeks to dispense with the figurative narratives of the traditional tarot and re-imagines the forces behind each card as pure colour. Drawing from the pioneering work of Moina Mathers and Florence Farr in the 1890s, Colquhoun integrates the esoteric teachings of the Golden Dawn with Surrealist automatic techniques to produce a design for a taro deck that remains unique in Western esotericism. Setting aside the role of the tarot in fortune-telling, through the power of pure colour Colquhoun invites us to reach for transcendence. Published here as a book for the first time, Taro As Colour draws upon newly commissioned photography to present Colquhoun's magical designs in vivid colour. Printed using the latest techniques of six-colour offset lithography, the original cards are augmented with gold and silver inks and gloss coated to better emulate the original enamels. Colquhoun's original essay is also accompanied by a scholarly introduction by Amy Hale, who explores the background, approach and theory behind this extraordinary body of work. The book is issued with four variations of elemental binding: Air (Yellow), Water (Blue), Fire (Red) and Earth (Indigo). First Edition. Hard Cover. New. Illus. by Seventy-eight Enamel Taro Card Designs, Reproduced/Printed In Six Colours. 4to size - over 10½" tall. Oversized Safely, Securely Packed.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: New. 1st Edition. Lopen, Somerset: Fulgur Limited, 2016. NEW. Limited to 777 Numbered Copies Only. Custom lined cloth box containing: Book of poetic ritual texts in custom blocked dust-jacket. From The Publisher (see image) : Ithell Colquhoun (1906-88) has frequently been considered solely as a footnote to the history of British Surrealism, but her contributions to the development of twentieth-century esoteric art and theory are now being more widely recognised. Despite a lifetime devoted to the study of art and esotericism, her published work remains scant, particularly with regard to her interest in the agency of colour. Building on Colquhoun's work with the kabbalah, the Decad of Intelligence was developed during the 1970s and is based on the list of sephirotic intelligences as set out in the Sepher Yetzirah. The work was designed to be a small book of ten enamel pieces, each depicting a different sephira, accompanied by a description of their properties. Colquhoun intended this work to be used as a guide to contemplation for understanding the deep nature of each of the sephiroth, both in isolation and in completeness. It is offered here as a book of texts and individual cards with this aim in mind. The cards have been produced with gold and silver highlights to better capture the nuance of the original works. The minimal design of the book echoes the sparse yet rich language of the contemplative texts. This edition is the first full publication of this important work. First Edition. Hard Cover/Custom Lined Cloth. New. Illus. by 10 Enamels Of The Sephiroth, Printed In Full Colour With Gold And Silver Highlights. 4to size - 11" tall. Oversized Safely, Securely Packed.
