Cette collection, « la plus encyclopédique produite par les navigateurs français » (Taillemite), traite de zoologie, de botanique, d'anthropologie et de physiologie humaine, de minéralogie et de géologie, de philologie, de physique et d'hydrographie, aussi bien par le texte que par l'image puisque 531 planches et cartes in-folio furent réalisées pour illustrer cet ouvrage. Le voyage est rédigé à partir du tome 4 par Vincendon-Dumoulin, hydrographe de l'expédition, d'après les journaux et carnets de Dumont D'Urville et les siens propres ainsi que ceux des officiers, la relation de Dumont D'Urville ayant été interrompu par son décès.
