Layton's revised edition was first published in 1925. There is rubbing to the corners, a light stain to the front panel and slight fading to the lettering on the spine but the…boards are otherwise unmarked. Browning to the page edges. Name and address of the original owner in ink on the front pastedown. Browning to the endpapers and there light marks in a few places throught the book but the pages are otherwise generally unmarked. No jacket.

Originally written by Anglican Naval chaplain John Bradley Harbord in 1863, who served as Chaplain of the Fleet between 1882 and 1888, becoming an Honorary Chaplain to the Queen from 1889 up until his death in 1896. This edition has been revised by nautical author C. W. T. Layton. In navy full-calf binding. Prize binding of the Incorporated Thames Nautical Training College, H. M. S. Worcester, with the college emblem to the front board and prize bookplate to the front paste down, dated 1955. Externally, very smart with only minor bumping and rubbing and a few marks. Leather bound. Condizione: Very good. First Edition. Unique association copy, originally belonging to Admiral Sir Arthur Mostyn Field for his study at the Britannia Royal Navel Academy at Dartmouth. Large 16mo (18 cm), pp. [viii], 1 - 193, [1 (errata)]. Bound in full leather with gilt-stamped titling, decoration and illustration… of Britannia with trident and lion above an anchor, and the personalized text, "FOR PROGRESS IN | STUDY, | A.M. FIELD" on front board, and "H.M.S. BRITANNIA. | JULY 1869" on back board. Five raised bands. All edges gilt. Brown endpapers. Field has signed his name on the front free endpaper: "A. Mostyn Field | H.M.S. Britannia | July 1869." Preface by the author, written aboard the H.M.S. Liverpool, July 1863. The glossary contains numerous line drawings to illustrate the navigational terms explained. Foxing to endpapers and slight edge wear to boards, else fine.Field was one of 38 cadets admitted to the academy in January 1869 (at the age of 13). He as ranked 6th by order of merit, (dreadnoughtproject [dot] org). "In the Britannia his all-round ability soon manifested itself and at the end of his two years in the ship he left as Chief Cadet Captain bearing with him the prizes for seamanship and navigation and heading the list of the forty cadets who sat for the final examinations." Following his time on Britannia, he rose through the ranks, eventually commanding survey ships conducting work in The Red Sea, the Straits of Magellan, the coasts of Africa, Australia's Great Barrier Reef and the Far East. In 1905, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. "In 1911, on the occasion of the coronation of His Majesty King George V, he was created a Knight Commander of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath and two years later was promoted to the rank of Admiral."
