Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of metal fatigue, a phenomenon that has intrigued engineers for over a century. Delving into the history of this field, the author traces its origins back to the groundbreaking work of Wohler, whose investigations in the 1870s laid the foundation for our understanding of how repeated stresses can lead to metal failure. The book then goes on to explore the key research conducted in the early 20th century, a period marked by the emergence of new technologies like airplanes and the need to understand the strength of materials under the demanding conditions of repeated stress. The author meticulously describes the different types of tests used to assess metal fatigue, from static tests that measure the resistance of a material to a steady load to repeated-stress tests designed to determine the endurance limit of a material under cyclical loading. Through the examination of these tests, the book sheds light on the important factors that influence the resistance of metals to fatigue, including heat treatment, surface finish, and the presence of internal stresses. This detailed account of early 20th-century research on metal fatigue provides valuable insights into the complexities of material behavior and offers a historical perspective on a field that remains crucial to engineering practice today. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…
