The first work, by Dutch historiographer and bibliographer Isaac Le Long (1683-1762), includes two booklets. In the first, Le Long describes how to profit from all kinds of trades and professions: mintmaster, printer, bookseller, baker, wine merchant, master builder, shipbuilder, wheelwright, etc. In the second, Le Long translates a work by the 17th-century German satirist, scholar, and pastor J.B. Schupp (1610-1661) that explains how to profit from art.The additional texts are three printings of other works by J.B. Schupp translated into Dutch, rarely found bound together. This trilogy of populist orations appears to have been assembled specifically for the Dutch market. The first of these texts, The Puppet of the World is followed by The Sensible Hitchhiker, being a Sequel to the Puppet of the World. This latter work, with orations like "The useless heirloom", also contains the political dialogue "De leeuw op den troon, of staatkundige samenspraak van den zelven met den vos, om het meschelyk geslacht onder de heerschappy van den koning der dieren te brengen" ("The lion on the throne, or the political dialogue of the lion and the fox, to bring the human race under the dominion of the king of animals").
