Both volumes have loss of much of the spine covering (see photos), but bindings are very solid and not broken or cracked. This set is an obvious candidate for rebacking. The covers have significant rubbing along edges and corners but the boards are relatively clean and bright with a few faint dark smudges (nothing serious). Each volume has previous owner's bookplate and small bookseller ticket on front pastedown otherwise no owner marks or writing on any pages, Some fore-edge foxing is present but nearly all pages are completely free of foxing and are clean. Each volume measures 251mm tall x 200mm (compared to 195mm tall for the regular first edition). Volume one has 494 pages, 20 b/w full-page illustrations and photos, 57 b/w in-text illustrations and photos, index. Volume two has 483 pages, 13 full-page illustrations and photos, 56 b/w in-text illustrations and photos, index. Volume one covers hunting in the arctic (whacking a giant walrus with an ax from a small whaling boat), three chapters on hunting in the Caucasus, a chapter on Mongolia, two chapter on hunting chamois and stags in the Alps, a chapter on elk in Scandinavia, a chapter on big game throughout Europe, hunting in Spain and Portugal, hunting in India tigers, a chapter on travel/camping considerations, a chapter on rifles and ammo, a chapter on taxidermy, a small bibliography. Volume two mostly about hunting in Africa with specific chapters on various types of big game hunting: lions, antelopes, hippos, giraffes, ostriches, rhinos, buffalo, elephants, with several chapters on South Africa including some history, a chapter on travel with Livingstone, some chapters on East Africa including special hunting considerations regarding gear, routes, etc. Volume two concludes with one chapter on big game hunting in North America (bears, wapiti, moose, cougars, bison, deer, elk, caribou, bighorn, mountain goat, antelope mainly in British Columbia, Alaska, Colorado and Pacific NW), and a brief chapter on hunting musk ox. Published in London by The "Leisure Hour" Office, 56 Paternoster Row. A particularly attractive example in the original publisher's elaborately decorated blue-green clo…th, with extensive gilt and coloured decoration to the upper board and spine. Most strikingly, the original cloth retains a rich blue-green colour: many surviving copies of these Victorian annuals have faded or discoloured substantially towards brown, whereas the colour of this copy remains unusually strong. The gilt is likewise bright and exceptionally attractive, with the elaborate cover design and floral decoration retaining considerable visual impact. The binding is remarkably strong for such a large Victorian volume. Boards firmly attached, text block firmly bound, with no loose leaves and no exposed gutters observed. Some modest wear to the extremities, principally at the spine ends and corners, consistent with age. Internally extensively and beautifully illustrated, with numerous engravings and full-page illustrations, together with colour and folding material. Particularly attractive colour-printed title page. The illustrations remain a major feature of the volume and include work by Kate Greenaway, together with Arthur Hughes, Paul Hardy, Herbert Johnson, W. J. Hennessy, Fred Miller, Clara von Rappard, John C. Staples, Edward Whymper, Alan Wright and numerous other artists of the period. Some foxing is present, principally concentrated in the opening and closing leaves, while much of the main body of the volume is substantially cleaner. A very small corner tear to one of the protective tissue sheets appears to be the only significant physical damage noted (shown in one of the images).
