Cet ouvrage est basé sur trente années d'expériences cliniques, traitant des causes, de la symptomatologie et du traitement des "psychonévroses" (incluant l'hystérie, la neurasthénie et l'anorexie mentale), avec de nombreuses observations. Les auteurs insistent sur le rôle des facteurs affectifs et émotionnels. Ils font appel pour le traitement à l'isolement quasi absolu. L'ouvrage comporte en frontispice une planche photographique représentant une salle d'isolement à La Salpêtrière. Cet ouvrage fut traduit en anglais en 1913.
