Ian Cameron traces the voyages of Cook, Bellingshausen, Ross, Scott, Shack…leton, Amundsen, Byrd, Hillary, Fuchs, and many others, blending historical narrative with expedition journals, contemporary artwork, detailed maps, and striking color photography of Antarctica's landscapes and wildlife. Produced by George Rainbird Ltd., the volume is noted for its high production quality, full-page illustrations, and attractive cartography, making it one of the better popular histories of Antarctic exploration issued during the 1970s. This is the First American Edition (1974), as stated on the copyright page 'First American edition published 1974 by Little, Brown and Company.' The book is best graded Very Good+: green cloth boards remain clean and square with bright gilt spine lettering, binding tight, and interior exceptionally clean with no foxing or structural defects. There are two neat contemporary ownership inscriptions on the front endpapers '1974 book' and 'Glen B Sept. '21', but no highlighting or marginalia. The dust jacket is graded only good due to substantial edge wear, multiple closed tears and chips along the upper edge, creasing, and several archival tape repairs to the verso. Despite the damage, the jacket is complete, unclipped, and displays well. An attractive reading and reference copy of a well-illustrated Antarctic history. Ian Cameron (1924-2018) was the pen name of British author Donald Gordon Payne, an accomplished historian and travel writer whose works frequently explored exploration, maritime history, and aviation. His books combined meticulous historical research with engaging narrative, making them accessible to general readers while remaining respected references for enthusiasts of polar exploration and naval history.
