Tobler wurde 1827 zur Ausbildung in Hofwyl, einer pädagogischen Musteranstalt, aufgenommen und verblieb dort bis 1833. Etwa die Hälfte seiner Autobiographie widmet er der Schilderung der Schulen von Hofwyl und deren Begründer, Emanuel von Fellenberg sowie dessen bedeutendstem Mitarbeiter Jakob Wehrli. Wehrlis Pädagogik sah eine Kombination von Unterricht und (landwirtschaftlicher) Arbeit vor und errang als sog. "Wehrlischule" auch jenseits der Landesgrenzen große Anerkennung.
