"James Joule (1818-1889, English) lectures on asserts the essential equivalence and interconvertibility of heat, mechanical, and chemical energy. His ideas derived initially from studies that heat produced by an electric current, but expanded to include additional forms of energy. Joule asserts that the "living force (kinetic energy) of a volume can be converted from or to heat but cannot be destroyed. A gjven quantity of heat or of mechanical energy always produces the same amount of "living force." Joule presents the numerical conversion factors for mechanical kinetic to heat energy, obtained from his experiments With an electromagnetic engine. Arranging a set of falling weights to produce a stirring of paddles in a container of water, Joule determines the amount of mechanical energy required to produce a given amount of heat energy, as calculated from the temperature increase of the water. He thereby determines the mechanical equivalent of heat: a 772-1b weight falling 1 foot raises the temperature of 1 lb of water by 1°F. Further experimentation leads him to conclude that a given expenditure of work of any kind can always be arranged to produce a set quantity of heat energy. First appearance of Joule's paper in which he describes his importent improvement of the Steam-Engine, using the principles of the first law of thermodynamics which he himsel…f helped to establish."In addition, numerous other researches stand to Joules credit -- the work done in compressing gases and the thermal changes they undergo when forced under pressure through small apertures (with Lord Kelvin), the change of volume on solution, the change of temperature produced by the longitudinal extension and compression of solids, etc. It was during the experiments involved by the first of these inquiries that Joule was incidentally led to appreciate the value of surface condensation in increasing the efficiency of the steam engine. A new form of condenser was tested on the small engine employed, and the results it yielded formed the starting-point of a series of investigations which were aided by a special grant from the Royal Society, and were described in an elaborate memoir presented to it on the 13th of December 1860 (the paper offered). His results, according to Kelvin, led directly and speedily to the present practical method of surface-condensation, one of the most important improvements of the steam engine, especially for marine use, since the days of James Watt. Joule died at Sale on the 11th of October 1889."(NNDB).

Fleeming Jenkin was a professor of engineering at Edinburgh as well as an imaginative electrician and cable engineer of note. Present here is Jenkin's import…ant paper on the electrical theory of submarine cables in undersea telecommunications. In it, Jenkin makes "a determination. of the specific inductive capacity of gutta-percha. This was the very first true measurement of the specific inductive capacity of a dielectric which had been made after the discovery by Faraday of the existence of the property, and his primitive measurement of it. At the time when Jenkin made his measurements the existence of specific inductive capacity was either unknown, or ignored, or denied, by almost all the scientific authorities of the day" (Memoir of Fleeming Jenkin). Note that Part II of this paper appeared in a different volume and we offer it separately. Also included: Joule on the heating effects of fluids in motion and the results of experiments "on the difference between the temperatures of an elastic fluid on the high-and-low pressure sides of a porous plug through which it was transmitted. Joule is well known for his discovery of Joule's Law, the connection between heat and mechanical work, where heat is a form of energy. "From Joule's extensive and reliable data [presented in this paper] Thomson derived an empirical law [stating] that the cooling effect per unit pressure difference varie[s] as the inverse square of the absolute temperature" (Carwell, 202). They showed that a gas expanding into vacuum without addition of external work undergo a change in temperature, in spite of the theoretical speculations. The temperature change occurs due to the internal work required to overcome the attractive forces between molecules."The only substantial contribution to thermodnamics to which the joint names of Joule and Thomson, are attached belongs to an idea conceived by Thomson, who saw the possibility of analyzing the deviations of gas properties from the ideal behavior. In particular, a non-ideal gas, made to expand slowly through a porous plug (so as to approximate a specified mathematical condition?constant enthalpy), would in general undergo a cooling (essentially a transformation of atomic motion into work spent against the interatomic attractions). For the delicate test of this effect Thomson required Joule?s unsurpassed skill (1852). But the application of the Joule- Thomson effect to the technology of refrigeration belongs to a later stage in the development of thermodynamics."(DSB).Peter Guthrie Tait (1831 - 1901) was a Scottish mathematical physicist, best known for the seminal energy physics textbook Treatise on Natural Philosophy, which he co-wrote with Kelvin, and his early investigations into knot theory, which contributed to the eventual formation of topology as a mathematical discipline.
