This edition of Shakespeare's complete plays includes the supposed emendations discovered by Shakespearean scholar John Payne Collier.Collier's greates…t claim to notoriety came in 1853, when he announced that he had discovered a copy of Shakespeare"s 2nd Folio (published in 1632), extensively corrected in a mid-17th century hand. However, the claims were challenged over the next few years and were eventually exposed as forgeries by the British Museum, inevitably staining Collier's reputation among his peers.This copy in half calf prize binding, with cloth boards. This inscribed 1862 first edition of Spenser's work is artifact of Victorian colonial governance. Present to Sir Arthur Hobhouse upon his 1872 departure to India, it bears a lengthy and gra…teful inscription from the Chief Commissioners of the Endowed Schools Commission. Association signed copy presented to Sir Arthur Hobhouse at the pivotal moment of his transition from reforming the English educational system to his appointment as Law Member of the Governor-General's Council in India. PROVENANCE: Presented by George William Lyttelton (4th Baron Lyttelton) and Hugh George Robinson to Sir Arthur Hobhouse in 1872. Subsequently held in the personal library of Sir Arthur Hobhouse (confirmed by his bookplate) until its dispersal. DESCRIPTION: Volume I of five volume set bound in full red morocco with gilt decorative border and ornate gilt stamp to centre of front and rear boards. Gilt ruled five ridged spine with gilt decorated panels. Gilt dentelles and gilt all edges. Marbled endpapers. The book contains a long inscription dated 1872 to Sir Arthur Hobhouse thanking him for his work at the Endowed Schools Commission before his departure to India for 'important duties'. The inscription is signed by George William Lyttelton (4th Baron and Chief Commissioner) and Hugh George Robinson ( a fellow commissioner) Language: English Book Condition: Very Good. Wear to corners, edges and spine ends. Rubbed boards and spine. Tightly bound with light spotting to intact endpapers and strong hinges. Occasional spotting and marks to a few pages.
