Condizione: Gut. Zustand: Gut | Seiten: 368 | Sprache: Englisch | Produktart: Bücher | Julian Schwinger was already the world¿s leading nuclear theorist when he joined the Radiation Laboratory at MIT in 1943, at the ripe age of 25. Just 2 years earlier he had joined the faculty at Purdue, after a postdoc with OppenheimerinBerkel…ey,andgraduatestudyatColumbia. Anearlysemester at Wisconsin had con?rmed his penchant to work at night, so as not to have to interact with Breit and Wigner there. He was to perfect his iconoclastic 1 habits in his more than 2 years at the Rad Lab. Despite its deliberately misleading name, the Rad Lab was not involved in nuclear physics, which was imagined then by the educated public as a esoteric science without possible military application. Rather, the subject at hand was the perfection of radar, the beaming and re?ection of microwaves which had already saved Britain from the German onslaught. Here was a technology which won the war, rather than one that prematurely ended it, at a still incalculable cost. It was partly for that reason that Schwinger joined this e?ort, rather than what might have appeared to be the more natural project for his awesome talents, the development of nuclear weapons at Los Alamos. He had got a bit of a taste of that at the ¿Metallurgical Laboratory¿ in Chicago, and did not much like it. Perhaps more important for his decision to go to and stay at MIT during the war was its less regimented and isolated environment.

Aggiungi al carrelloSoft cover. Condizione: Good. 1 leaf, 172 pp. Original wrappers. Three holes punched in gutter margin, with three metal fasteners. Bottom corners of pages bumped. "Since Schwinger lectured extemporaneously, the notes from these lectures were the only available record of his teaching. . . . John Blatt took and collected the notes… of lectures on theoretical nuclear physics. As Roy Glauber recalled, the process was non-local: 'John Blatt took very good notes. These notes were shipped off to Princeton, where the graduate students there copied these notes onto ditto masters, and ran off copies. . . . These notes became an underground skeleton key, the "Cliff Notes of quantum mechanics." ' Hectographic reproductions of these notes were distributed to students as 'Lectures on Nuclear Physics' in 1947 and later years. The demand for these authorized but unofficial notes remained steady for along time and in 1952 they were reproduced as a text at Boston University [offered here]. They were not destined ever to become a book, because they did not meet Schwinger's impossibly perfectionist standards" (Mehra & Milton, Climbing the Mountain, p. 155). Part II. Nuclear Theory, Spring Term 1947, was issued by Boston University in 1955. I do NOT have a copy of part II. Copy of Felix Villars (with his pencil signature on front wrapper). "In the infancy of quantum electrodynamics, he and the Swiss Nobel Laureate Wolfgang Pauli developed a simple and elegant method to regulate the mathematical singularities in quantum field theory and extract finite physical results. The resulting method, known as 'Pauli-Villars regularization,' was widely influential and is known and used by all students of field theory". In 1950 Villars came to MIT and gave his own course on Quantum Theory in 1952-53, the notes for which were issued in a mimeographed format.

Aggiungi al carrelloLancaster, PA & New York, American Physical Society, 1948. Royal8vo. Bound in contemporary black full cloth with gilt lettering to spine. In "Nature", Vol. 74, 1948. Spine with a bit a wear and front hinge a bit loose, otherwise a fine and clean copy. First printing of the single most important volume of The Physical Review cont…aining an exceptional number of important papers - amongst other the first paper to describe the transistor: One of the most important inventions of the 20th Century which awarded them the Nobel Prize in physics in 1956.,The three first titles are the short letters in Physical Review which first announced the invention of the transistor. The following year Bardeen and Brattain published the more comprehensive report "Physical Principles Involved in Transistor Action". This paper was simultaneously published, the same month, in The Bell System Technical Journal (Number 2 volume 28). In 1956 Bardeen and Brattain shared the Nobel Prize in Physics with William Shockley "for their researches on semiconductors and their discovery of the transistor effect". In 1972 Bardeen again received the Nobel Prize in Physics for his part in the development of the theory of superconductivity (BCS-theory), and thus became the only person, until this day, to receive the Nobel Prize more than once in the same field. "The invention of the transistor would in time change the world by making possible the microchip and all the devices that followed from it, but the discovery ruined the spirit of the Bell Laboratories semiconductor group. Shockley, who had been uninvolved in the invention of the original transistor, stunned Bardeen and Brattain when he tried to patent the invention in his name, hoping to base it on his suggestion of the field-effect amplifier. Shockley's plan failed because the patent attorneys discovered that Julius E. Lilienfeld, a Polish-American inventor, had already patented the field-effect notion in 1930. Shockley further antagonized Brattain and Bardeen by preventing them from working on the consequences of their historic invention, a second transistor, known as the junction device, which could better be used commercially." (DSB)The issue also contain two of the papers leading to Richard Feynman's 1965 Nobel Prize in Physics, (A Relativistic Cut-Off for Classical Electrodynamics & Relativistic Cut-Off for Quantum Electrodynamics) and the paper that led to Polykarp Kusch's 1955 Nobel Prize in Physics (The Magnetic Moment of the Electron)Also containing Maria Goeppert-Mayer paper that led to her 1963 Nobel Prize in Physics (On Closed Shells in Nuclei), the seminal P. A. M. Dirac paper on magnetic monopoles (A theory of Magnetic Poles) and three important papers on The Big Bang Theory by George Gamow, Ralph Alpher and George Herman (The Origin of the Elements and the Separation of Galaxies & Thermonuclear Reactions in the Expanding Universe & On the Relative Abundance of the Elements & A Neutron-Capture Theory of the Formation and Relative Abundance of the Elements).See Hook & Norman: Origins of Cyberspace, No. 450.
