Nadat geformuleerd: is in de R.K. kerk aan de Bijbel de vrijheid gelaten om te zeggen wat hij zeggen wil? Is het niet zo, dat in Rome "de Bijbel aan de ketting ligt"? Deze u…itdrukking ziet op het middeleeuws gebruik om de destijds meest kostbare, met de hand geschreven boeken aan kettingen te leggen ten einde ze tegen diefstal te beveiligen. Maar sedert de Reformatie heelt men aan deze gewoonte vooral symbolische betekenis toegekend: in de "duistere Middeleeuwen" zou de Kerk de Bijbel opzettelijk aan de gelovigen hebben onthouden, zodat pas Luther haar weer zou hebben "ontdekt", diep onder het stof van een kloosterbibliotheek. Het staat tegenwoordig wel vast, dat deze voorstelling van zaken niet geheel juist is en dat er van kerkelijke zijde niet een volstrekt verbod heeft bestaan om de Bijbel te lezen. Dat zou trouwens in lijnrechte tegenstelling zijn geweest tot wat men thans in de kerk van Rome kan opmerken: een duidelijke verlangens om de massa der gelovigen met de Bijbel vertrouwd te maken. De vraag blijft evenwel, of de aan de ketting liggende Bijbel der Middeleeuwen niet toch ? en in diepere zin ? symbolisch is. Heeft de Bijbel in de R.K. kerk de vrijheid om zijn eigen gang te gaan, de wereld in, en te zeggen wat hij te zeggen heeft? Of ligt de Schrift vast aan allerlei door de Kerk gestelde regels, die een juiste vertaling en interpretatie onmogelijk maken? Dit laatste is naar de mening van de Amsterdamse hoogleraar dr. J.N. Sevenster het geval en aan het nauwkeurig onderzoek van de in dit opzicht meest essentiële, aan protestanten vaak ten enenmale onbekende feiten wijdde hij deze boeiende en belangwekkende studie. Daarin komen vragen aan de orde als deze: Ligt de vertaling en uitlegging van bepaalde bijbelplaatsen bij Rome niet eens en voor al vast, omdat zij het uitgangspunt vormen voor leerbeslissingen, waarop niet kan worden teruggekomen? Welke richtlijnen zijn middels allerlei pauselijke encyclieken gegeven voor de vertaling en uitlegging der Schrift en hoe moeten wij daarover denken? Welke rol speelt de traditie in deze dingen en wat is het principieel verschil tussen het R.K. traditiebegrip en het reformatorische? Op welke concrete plaatsen zijn de R.K. bijbelvertalers en exegeten gebonden aan wat door de Kerk onherroepelijk is vastgesteld? De auteur gaat zeer zekelijk in op een aantal van de meest aangelegen teksten, waarbij de vertaling of de exegese principieel scheidend maakt tussen Rome en de Reformatie. Rome en de vrije Bijbel is geschreven door een geleerde, die respect toont te hebben voor het werk van zijn R.K. collega's en die nergens de vijandige toon nodig heelt om duidelijk te maken dat hij met hen en hun opvattingen principieel van mening verschilt. Het kan niet anders, of dit boek zal een belangrijke bijdrage blijken tot het gesprek tussen Rome en de Reformatie.
