A very good copy. --- The Strassburg Alexander and the lost ro- mance represented by the Munich Oswald were written during the third quarter of the twelfth century, a time when German narrative verse was beginning to escape the domination of the Church and appeal primarily to the secular interests of the public. The works are clearly transitional in nature, reflecting a strong clerical in- fluence while pointing toward a future in which the nobility, rather than the clergy, would be the chief arbiter of literary tastes. The Strassburg Alexander is a version of one of the most popular stories of an- tiquity and all time-the largely fictitious account of the great Macedonian-and is the earliest complete narrative in German to use a French model. As such, it may be credited with arousing the interest of German writers in the literature that was to become the primary source of most of the important works of medieval Germa- ny. The Munich Oswald too is based pri- marily on the deeds of an important historical figure: the seventh-century King Oswald of Northumbria who was instru- mental in the defeat and Christianization of the West Saxons. Although the work is humorous and has a secular plot, the winning and abduction of a bride, its chief influence is seen not in the litera- ture that followed but in the develop- ment and spread of the cult of Saint Os- wald, that became a vital religious force throughout South Germany and the Al- pine lands during the later Middle Ages. The Strassburg Alexander and the Munich Oswald appear for the first time in En- glish in this volume. --- CONTENTS: Preface - - Introduction - - Strassburg Alexander - - 1. Prince Alexander - - 2.
