Williams Butcher's early 20th-century juvenile adventure The Camp on the Shore, originally published in 1913 by Henry Frowde, Hodder & Stoughton, and complete with internal black-and-white illustrations by J.D. Mills. Offered in Fair antiquarian condition, the book block is bound in the publisher's original pictorial cloth, which exhibits overall heavy surface soiling, rubbing to the extremities, and softening to the spine ends, lacking the original paper dust jacket, spine is also missing, but binding remains secure, with all 118 pages firmly attached. The front endpapers feature a torn contemporary school prize certificate cleanly dated 1931, while the internal text leaves have sporadic foxing , edges are tanned. A highly complete, charming example of an early 20th-century British children's reward volume, priced realistically to reflect its modest commercial demand and honest cosmetic flaws. First Edition 1911 Original pictorial boards, 8 vo. , deep red background embellished to the front board with a scene of boys trying to save another boy from a frozen pond, picture is highlighted in white, brown and black, gilt lettering for the titles nice and bright, gilt lettering to spine and illustration of two men one shooting the other, the book is in a very good bright and clean condition, with only minimal signs of wear, the paper endpapers have cracked along the hinges revealing mesh used in binding, this could be repaired but in fact it looks quite reasonable and shows the book has been used and enjoyed, foxing to closed page edges, pale endpapers with some browning, faded signature to front paste down 'L C Vernon, ' frontispiece is a montage of photographs being 'The principal Characters, ' on page ix the author writes to the reader detailing the nature of each character this is followed by by the Contents and List of Illustrations, i- xiii, 264 pages, the last two have been cut out presumably they were publishing advertisements, there is foxing in the book although it does not prevent relaxed reading, this would seem to be from the quality of the paper used, 7 full page illustrations. A typical boys' book from this era about school protocol and boyish pranks. Books that are collected and enjoyed by enthusiasts. …
