Later that year, itt was refused a licence for performance, i.e., banned, in England as pornographic and due to an absolute prohibition on the portrayal of biblical subjects on the English stage. The play was published jointly in Paris and London in 1893 in the original French, and in London a year later in Lord Alfred Douglas's English translation with illustrations by Aubrey Beardsley. It was not performed until 1896 in Paris, during Wilde's incarceration. The play depicts the attempted seduction of Jokanaan (John the Baptist) by Salome, stepdaughter of Herod Antipas; her dance of the seven veils; the execution of Jokanaan at Salome's instigation; and her death on Herod's orders. Valenti Angelo (illustratore).…

Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good Slipcase. OSCAR WILDE'S SALOME TRANSFORMED INTO A DECORATIVE BOOK. An especially attractive Heritage Press production of Wilde's one-act tragedy, conceived as an integrated work of book design by Valenti Angelo. Angelo surrounds the text with elaborate floral and Near Eastern-inspired ornament, full-page illustrations, decorative endpapers, and hand-applied illumination. The Lord Alfred Douglas translation is accompanied by Holbrook Jackson's introduction, which places Salome within Wilde's career and discusses the play's controversial publication and theatrical history. PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: FRENCH-FOLDED LEAVES WITH DECORATION THROUGHOUT. Black cloth over boards with multiple blind-stamped borders and a large blind-stamped figure of Salome on both covers; gilt spine titles. Housed in the publisher's black slipcase. Slipcase approximately 10.5 inches tall. 51 pages. The text block is constructed from French-folded leaves, with the sheets folded at the fore-edge to create double leaves. Each opening is extensively decorated with Angelo's yellow and gold-toned ornamental borders, which change throughout the volume. Decorated endpapers; illustrated title-page spread; full-page color illustrations and decorative devices throughout. Angelo was responsible for both the illustration and overall book design. Contemporary descriptions record five full-page color illustrations in addition to the title vignette and other decoration. CONDITION: FINE IN A VERY GOODSLIPCASE. Binding tight and square, cloth clean, blind-stamped decoration distinct, and gilt spine titles bright. Interior clean and fresh, with the decorative pages and illustrations retaining strong color. Publisher's slipcase with light wear at the corners of the opening. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - VALENTI ANGELO AND THE BOOK AS DECORATIVE OBJECT. Salome, written by Wilde in French in 1891 and first published in 1893, became one of his most visually interpreted works, most famously through Aubrey Beardsley's illustrations for the English edition. PRODUCTION BUILT AROUND THE ARTIST'S DESIGN. For the Heritage Press edition, Valenti Angelo created an entirely different visual treatment, integrating illustration, typography, ornament, binding design, and hand illumination into the physical structure of the book. Angelo was a prolific designer and illustrator for both the Heritage Press and Limited Editions Club, and this edition is among the Heritage Press titles for which he supplied the complete decorative program. The result is particularly successful as an example of mid-century American illustrated book production: Wilde's decadent biblical drama recast through Angelo's highly stylized decorative vocabulary. SUBJECTS: Oscar Wilde, Salome, Valenti Angelo, Lord Alfred Douglas, Holbrook Jackson, Heritage Press, Book Design, Hand Illumination, Decorative Binding, Biblical Drama, Decadent Literature, Fine Printing, Fine Press, Illustrated Books, Drama, Decorative Book Arts, Heritage Press, Literary Classics.…

Slipcased. Condizione: Near Fine. No Jacket. First, Thus. Generally believed to have been written by Wilde for the actress Sarah Bernhardt, this play was banned in England when it first appeared in 1891, though it remained popular both there & in Paris. This is a stunning 2-volume slipcased set, one of which appears in the original French (& is SIGNED by the artist). Issued in only 1500 copies for members of the Limited Editions Club in 1938, this is #1001, both housed in a burgundy stiff cardboard slipcase. Vol 1, in French, is illustrated with gouache drawings on black paper by André Derain (reproduced through the pochoir process), whose signature appears on the colophon/limitation page in rear. With black wrappers lettered in white & peach to front cover, French flaps, unpaginated, it is in Near Fine condition: exceptionally clean & bright & unmarked, with clear mylar protected the wrappers. The 71+ pages show slight offsetting. Vol. II is the English translation by Sir Alfred Douglas, with a new Introduction by Holbrook Jackson & the original pen-and-ink erotic drawings of Aubrey Beardsley. With rust-colored cloth over boards, brightly stamped with an elaborate gilt design & lettering to front/somewhat faded gilt to spine, it contains 105 pages with rough-cut edges. Condition is also Near Fine: completely clean & unmarked, fading to spine & in a few random spots on both boards. The slipcase itself shows irregular fading & significant rubbing to extremities & bottom edges are beginning to tear from opening inwards about 1"-2". Still solid & completely functional, protecting these lovely editions since 1938. Our photos depict the Exact books you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have on hand. Same day shipping on all orders received by 2 pm weekdays (Pacific time); later orders, weekends & holidays ship very next business day. SORRY: this set is too large & fragile for expedited domestic or any international shipping without a larger box, which will incur preapproval of extra postage per USPS rates.
