Der strenge Vater schickte "den verlorenen Sohn" 1778 nach Wandsbek zu Matthias Claudius, der zwei Jahre versuchte, ihn von seiner unstillbaren Esslust abzuhalten! Danach musste er vier Jahre das harte Regiment der Fürstin von Gallitzin in Münster ertragen. 1791/92 begleitete er den Grafen Friedrich Leopold zu Stolberg auf dessen Bildungsreise durch die Schweiz und Italien. In seinen Briefen in die Heimat verweist er häufig auf das Tagebuch "seines väterlichen Führers und großen Wohlthäters", dem diese beiden Bände auch gewidmet sind.
