Kloster Kappel, ab 1538 am Zürcher Fraumünster, 1540 Stud. der Theologie in Tübingen, Marburg und Leipzig, Rückkehr nach Zürich auf Geheiss des Zürcher Studentenamts. 1542 Pfarrer in Witikon, gleichzeitig Provisor an der Fraumünsterschule, 1545 Pfarrer in Egg, 1552 Pfarrer an der Predigerkirche in Zürich, 1557 zweiter Archidiakon und Chorherr am Zürcher Grossmünster. W. hinterliess eine der bedeutendsten Nachrichtensammlungen der 2. Hälfte des 16. Jh. Von 1560 bis zu seinem Tod stellte er 24 Foliobände zusammen, die sog. Wickiana, die neben handschriftl. Aufzeichnungen rund 500 Flugschriften und über 400 Einblattdrucke zu Naturereignissen, Unglück und Verbrechen sowie geschichtl. Vorkommnissen enthalten. W. bezeichnete seine Sammlung als Wunderbücher. Ihre Genese steht im Zusammenhang mit dem Aufkommen der Prodigiensammlungen und einer verstärkten Aufmerksamkeit für die Zeichen und Wunder Gottes um die Mitte des 16. Jh. Am Zustandekommen der Sammlung waren auch Mitglieder des Zürcher Chorherrenstifts und der Schola Tigurina beteiligt. Druckschriften und handschriftl. Mitteilungen aus Gelehrten-Briefwechseln erhielt W. u.a. von Konrad Gessner, Rudolf Gwalther, Ludwig Lavater und Josias Simler. V.a. profitierte er vom umfangreichen Briefwechsel Heinrich Bullingers» (HLS). 600 gr. Schlagworte: Helvetica - Zürich, Geschichte - Mittelalter.
