This volume is attributed to the author of 'Mistura Curiosa', known to be James Archibald Sidey (1825-1886), an Edinburgh medical practitioner. While diligent in the…pursuit of his professional calling, he found time for the exercise of various natural gifts, of which he was possessed. He collected a vast amount of facts and observations on matters which generally escape the notice of most persons. He was also the author of many songs and verses, most of them of a humorous nature. This volume is a further collection of 'Lilts and Lyrics,' and with the exception of three, they were all written in order to relieve the tedium of many a night-journey, as, weary with is day's work, he was unable to read or sleep, as he lay in the dimly-lighted railway carriage, and listened to the sound of the wheels, which generally suggested to him first the music and then the words. The illustrations include works by John Smart (1838-1899) and Charles Altamont Doyle (1832-1893), who is remembered today primarily for being the father of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes. The book has fairly recently been re-backed and re-cased in the original green cloth covered bevelled boards with the original spine laid onto new green cloth, and as a result the book is now tight and secure. There is gold titling on the spine and front board and a small gold illustration on the front board. The original boards have shelf wear with some soiling and light staining and the cloth on the corner tips is worn with a little damage and loss of colour. About 1/4" is missing from both ends of the original overlaid spine. The contents are tight and clean and the book has new black endpapers. There is no inscription. C.A. The sole edition of Edinburgh-based physician James Archibald S…idey's (1825-1886) posthumously published whimsical facetiae composed for, and read by him at the meetings of the Monks of Saint Giles literary society. Founded in 1852 and continuing to this day, the establishment of the society was due primarily Sidey's efforts, who had previously formed the Young Edinburgh Club in 1825, from the ashes of which the new organisation emerged. Upon attaining membership, each 'Monk' is given a monastic name by which they are known to their fellows and under which their contributions to the 'Reminiscences' are made. Size: Quarto.
