Educated at Cambridge (M.A., M.D.), he served at St Thomas? Hospital in London as Consulting Physiotherapist and lecturer in massage and movement therapy. This influential text, originally entitled Massage: Its Principles and Practice and Physical Treatment by Movement, Manipulation and Massage (1934)?systematized manipulative and massage techniques for musculoskeletal disorders. He is also remembered for ?Mennell?s sign,? a diagnostic test for sacroiliac joint pain, and for bridging the divide between medical and physical-therapy disciplines in the early twentieth century. Mennell?s work, while distinct from chiropracty, profoundly influenced it through shared emphasis on joint mechanics and manual manipulation. As a medically trained physician, he sought to give physical therapy a scientific basis, distinguishing therapeutic manipulation from chiropractic subluxation theories.
