This book delves into the science and art of massage, a practice that was gaining considerable importance in the early 20th century, particularly in the treatment of war injuries. The author, a medical professional deeply invested in the field, presents a nuanced approach that emphasizes the importance of understanding the underlying principles of massage rather than simply following rote techniques. He stresses the critical distinction between the reflex and mechanical effects of massage, highlighting how each can be utilized for different therapeutic purposes. The book explores the complexities of massage, dissecting its impact on circulation, lymphatic flow, and the stretching of tissues. The author challenges conventional wisdom by arguing that forceful, vigorous massage can often be detrimental, especially in cases of injury and chronic conditions. Instead, he advocates for a gentle, deliberate approach, focusing on the careful application of pressure and movement to achieve specific physiological outcomes. The authorââ â¢s deep understanding of anatomy, physiology, and the principles of healing, combined with his extensive experience, makes this book a valuable resource for medical professionals and massage practitioners seeking to understand the true potential of massage as a therapeutic modality. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. By emphasizing the mechanical and reflex effects of massage, the author challenges the widespread idea of massage as a purely physical action. The reflex effect of massage, long ignored in many schools of massage therapy, is extensively discussed. The author presents arguments based on both theory and scientific observations to support the idea that the mechanical effect of massage is only one aspect of its therapeutic benefits, the reflex effect being equally important in restoring function. The book provides a nuanced understanding of massage as a powerful therapeutic modality, emphasizing the importance of understanding both its mechanical and reflex actions. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good(+). 5th ed. Octavo in blue cloth, gilt titles, 512 pp: illustrations; 23 cm. Uncommon. James Beaver Mennell (c. 1880?1957) was a British physician and pioneer of modern physiotherapy whose works helped formalize manual treatment in medicine. Educated at Cambridge (M.A., M.D.), he served at St Thomas? Hospital in London as Consulting Physiotherapist and lecturer in massage and movement therapy. This influential text, originally entitled Massage: Its Principles and Practice and Physical Treatment by Movement, Manipulation and Massage (1934)?systematized manipulative and massage techniques for musculoskeletal disorders. He is also remembered for ?Mennell?s sign,? a diagnostic test for sacroiliac joint pain, and for bridging the divide between medical and physical-therapy disciplines in the early twentieth century. Mennell?s work, while distinct from chiropracty, profoundly influenced it through shared emphasis on joint mechanics and manual manipulation. As a medically trained physician, he sought to give physical therapy a scientific basis, distinguishing therapeutic manipulation from chiropractic subluxation theories. His studies on joint play and the restoration of normal joint movement anticipated core concepts later integrated into orthopaedic manual therapy and even adopted by some chiropractors seeking evidence-based practice. Thus, Mennell served as a bridge figure?defining manipulative medicine within orthodox medicine while indirectly legitimizing manual approaches that chiropracty also employed. | Chiropracty.
