"George Thomas Clark's life spanned the nineteenth century and, as one of the contributors to this study notes, he was indeed 'the quintessential Victorian polymath'. He followed a varied career as surgeon, civil engineer and public health inspector, working with Brunel on the construction of the Great Western Railway and with Chadwick on the implementation of the Public Health Act. In 1855 he became resident trustee of the Dowlais Iron Works, and it was from then on that Clark came to prominence as one of the foremost industrialists of south Wales and as an influential figure in its politics. He was, also, typical of the Victorian philanthropist, and he and his wife were active in their support of churches, chapels, schools, hospitals and needy individuals. Yet, despite his full professional and public life, he still found time to pursue his scholarly and artistic interests. His long and prolific life is most deserving of commemoration, and we are indebted to the contributors to this volume for providing us with a comprehensive and rounded portrait of one of the great Victorians.".…
