"The Seven Arts", an important, if briefly existing, monthly literary journal published in from 1916 to 1917, during the upheaval of the First World War, attempted to unite the American literary scene by providing a vibrant central venue for the presentation of leading voices in the arts community. James Oppenheim and Waldo Frank were the editors who were the main driving force, but the advisory board was made up of such literary luminaries as Kahlil Gibran, Robert Frost, Louis Untermeyer, Van Wyck Brooks, Edna Kenton and others. Contributors numbered among the most talented writers of the time ( Sherwood Anderson, J. D. Beresford, Randolph Bourne, Theodore Dreiser, Robert Frost, Kahlil Gibran, D. H. Lawrence, Amy Lowell, Paul Rosenfeld, and Louis Untermeyer were among the most frequent contributors). The editorial staff of the magazine took a decidedly anti-war stance, which may have contributed to its unfortunately brief duration. This is December 1916 issue of "the Seven Arts" contains the following: * "Queer" - by Sherwood Anderson (a Winesburg, Ohio story) * Supers - by Frederick Booth * The Empty Theater - by J. D. Beresford * The Headland - by Arthur Davison Ficke * A Side Street - by Louis Untermeyer * Prelude - by Clement Wood * The Greater Sea - by Kahlil Gibran * Voices - by Hortense Flexner * Young America - by Van Wyck Brooks * Editorials * Concerning a Little Theater - by Waldo Frank * Beyond the Screen - by Kenneth Macgowan * Aesthetic Form - by Willard Huntington Wright * The Masqueraders - by Peter Minuit * Mothers of Daughters - by Edna Kenton * The Strong Young Modern - by James Oppenheim THE SEVEN ARTS Volume I, Number 2 December 1916 EDITORS : James Oppenheim , Waldo Frank IMPRINT : Seven Arts Publishing Co.
