Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fair. 1st Edition. FANTASY: THE 100 BEST BOOKS, James Cawthorn & Michael Moorcock, hardcover with unclipped dust jacket, first American edition, 1988. BOOK CONDITION: near fine. The text block is in fine condition, with no tears, dogears, or marks. No bookplate or signature of a prior owner. Not a library book or remainder. The blue cloth boards are in very good condition (lightly bumped top of spine and small spot on front cover). The dust jacket is in fair condition (would be near fine but for crumpled top edge of front). 8 1/2 x 5 ½, 216 pages, 11 ounces XX [from the dust jacket flaps] Fantasy is one of the most appealing and yet most puzzling of literary genres. Appealing because it can offer dreams, the fulfillment of wishes, and escape; but puzzling because it spans such a wide and diverse range of books, from such key works of the twentieth century as Kafka's THE TRIAL to the rows and rows of sword-and-sorcery epics that currently jam bookracks all over the world. To bring some standards to bear and to guide possibly confused readers through this mass, James Cawthorn and Michael Moorcock here offer their personal choice of the 100 best books that the genre has produced. And, as one would expect with two such expert authors, the choices are shrewd and informed, and the accounts of each book blend information and judgement in a highly entertaining manner. The books are presented in date order, so that the guide as a whole builds into an informal history of fantastic writing, from such early classics as GULLIVER'S TRAVELS, VATHEK and MOBY-DICK, through the pulp era of the 1930s which produced extraordinary works like Abraham Merrit's DWELLERS IN THE MIRAGE and Robert E. Howard's CONAN series, to contemporary fantasists such as Fritz Leiber, Angela Carter and Peter Ackroyd. In their selections and their by turns warm and tart comments James Cawthorn and Michael Moorcock give a unique insiders' view of a literature that already provokes fierce controversy among fans and critics alike; without doubt, FANTASY: THE 100 BEST BOOKS will add explosive fuel to the debate, and remain a source of knowledge and delight for years to come. XX JAMES CAWTHORN is best known as an illustrator of science fiction and fantasy. He and Michael Moorcock have been friends and collaborators for more than thirty years, working together at first on fanzines like BURROUGHSIANA and later on TARZAN ADVENTURES and NEW WORLDS. They have previously co-written Caribbean Crisis (a Sexton Blake adventure), The Distant Suns and the movie The Land That Time Forgot. James Cawthorn has also drawn comics and graphic novels in the fantasy vein and reviewed regularly for New Worlds and other journals. MICHAEL MOORCOCK, Britain's best known fantasy author, has written more than fifty books ranging from the sword-and-sorcery adventures of Elric of Melnibone to more recent and ambitious novels such as Byzantium Endures and Mother London. Winner of The Guardian fiction prize and the coveted Nebula award, he is also known for his influential editorship of New Worlds. As Angus Wilson wrote: 'No one at the moment is doing more to break down the artificial divisions that have grown up in novel writing - realism, science fiction, social satire, the poetic novel -- than Michael Moorcock.'.

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good+. Illustrated by James Cawthorn (illustratore). 1st Edition; 1st Printing. B&W Illustrations; This is a trade sized paperback book. The book is in Very Good+ condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The book and its contents are in mostly clean, bright condition. There is a hologram as part of the front book cover. The text pages are clean, but noticeably toned due to the acid content of the paper. "In 1957 at the age of 17, Moorcock became editor of Tarzan Adventures (a national juvenile weekly featuring text and Tarzan comic strip) where he published at least a dozen of his own Sojan the Swordsman stories during that year and the next. At age 18 (in 1958) , he wrote the allegorical fantasy novel The Golden Barge. This remained unpublished until 1980, when it was issued by Savoy Books with an introduction by M. John Harrison. At 19 years of age he also edited Sexton Blake Library (serial pulp fiction featuring Sexton Blake, the poor man's Sherlock Holmes) and returned to late Victorian London for some of his books. Writing ever since, he has produced a huge volume of work. His first story in New Worlds was "Going Home" (1958; with Barrington J. Bayley). "The Sundered Worlds", a 57-page novella published in the November 1962 number of Science Fiction Adventures edited by John Carnell, became, with its sequel "The Blood Red Game" from the same magazine, the basis for his 190-page paperback debut novel three years later, The Sundered Worlds (Compact Books, 1965; in the U. S. , Paperback Library, 1966)." (from Wikipedia).
