Pamphlet. 16 p.; 20.5 cm. Preface and dedication [by Edmund S. Ffoulkes] to The Roman Catholic Hierarchy of Great Britain and Ireland. [title continues] by the loyal profession of which our Roman Catholic ancestors achieved emancipation for themselves and us. Reprinted from the edition of 1815. -- Original title: Roman-Catholick principles, in reference to God and the King : explained in a letter to a friend, and now made publick, to shew the connexion between the said principles, and the late Popish Plot. By a well-wisher of his countrey. London, 1680. [initials at end: M. B.] -- The 1815 edition is titled: Roman-Catholick principles, in reference to God and the King, first published in the year 1680. to which is prefixed An enquiry respecting the editions and the author of that "valuable tract" by John Kirk. London: printed for Jos. Booker, 1815. [identifying the author as James Croker, Benedictine abbot at Lambspring, Germany] -- The tract, p.9-16, comprises three sections: I. Of the Catholic faith, and church in general; II. Of spiritual and temporal authority; III. Of other points of Catholic faith. -- Later it served as outline for James Waterworth's The faith of Catholics, 1846, 3 vols. -- As a response to E. B. Pusey's Eirenicon, the Anglican editor of this edition avers that `It stands out as a landmark in the history of British Catholicism since the Reformation, and marks its upward progress from the lowest depths of humiliation and prostration. It, more than any other known work, has reconciled our countrymen, so far, to the faith of their ancestors, that they have been content to re-admit us to full citizenship, on the faith of those sober and truly Christian principles which it sets forth.' (p. 8) Good, removed. Small chip from front margin of title-page.
