Harrison gained fame for leading U.S. forces against Native Americans at the Indiana Territory Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811 and the essay was presumably penned during his adjournment to farm life between his defeat in the 1836 presidential election and before launching his successful 1840 presidential campaign with running mate John Tyler. Harrison penned one other Indian-related essay A DISCOURSE ON THE ABORIGINES OF THE VALLEY OF THE OHIO issued as a pamphlet of 51 pages and printed in Cincinnati in 1838.
