All in all a presentable copy of an extremely uncommon pamphlet. Founded July 4, 1857, University of the South was conceived of by its founders as a denominational university that would espouse southern ideals without northern interference. Or as James Otey put it, the university would "materially aid the South to resist and repel a fanatical domination which seeks to rule over us" (qtd in Deyle p. 206). Though it would be after the Civil War that the University commenced, this is one of the early and foundational documents. These proceedings include information on two 2500-acre tracts deeded to the University by the Sewanee Mining Company as well as smaller tracts given by Arthur Rutledge, Allen Gipson, and others.
