Au cours de l'été 2011, M le Musée de Louvain présente l'exposition itinérante « Un Regard Romantique » et le Fonds Mercator publie le catalogue qui l'accompagne. Un ensemble de quelque 70 tableaux compose un panorama unique de la peinture romantique du 19e siècle en Belgique et aux Pays-Bas. L'automne dernier, cette exposition a déjà été accueillie au Musée d'Etat de l'Ermitage à Saint-Pétersbourg sous le titre Through the Romanticist's Eyes. Le début du dix-neuvième siècle fut une époque agitée: à peine la révolution française avait-elle balayé les certitudes séculaires de l'Ancien Régime que l'Europe tout entière fut ébranlée par les guerres napoléoniennes. De nouvelles classes sociales émergèrent: la bourgeoisie et la classe ouvrière. Le libéralisme et la révolution industrielle s'imposèrent. Autrement dit, la société évoluait à une vitesse vertigineuse. Evolution qui se révéla particulièrement spectaculaire dans le monde artistique. En réaction à la rationalité du siècle des Lumières, le Romantisme consacra la primauté du sentiment, des passions et du mysticisme. Bien que cette réaction ait été perceptible dans toute l'Europe, le romantisme pictural se résume actuellement à quelques noms, comme William Turner, John Constable, Théodore Gericault ou Eugène Delacroix. La peinture romantique des Pays-Bas s'est peu à peu effacée de la mémoire collective. Pourtant, les artistes de cette école romantique peu connue, qui excellaient dans la technique, nous ont laissé de véritables petits chefs-d'oeuvre, pittoresques et sublimes. L'exposition et le catalogue qui l'accompagne « Un Regard Romantique » sont structurés autour de cinq thèmes ou genres : paysages d'été et d'hiver, marines, vues urbaines, natures mortes et portraits. Deze reactie is in heel Europa voelbaar maar toch omvat de huidige canon van romantische schilders slechts een handvol namen als William Turner, John Constable, Theodore Gericault of Eugene Delacroix. De volledige romantische schilderkunst uit de Lage Landen is echter langzaam verdwenen uit het collectieve geheugen. De kunstenaars van deze weinig gekende romantische schilderschool muntten uit in techniek en vervaardigden pittoreske en sublieme pareltjes. Werken van Barend Cornelis Koekkoek, Andreas Schelfhout, David de Noter, Fredrik Marinus Kruseman, Jacob Abels, Basile de Loose, Petrus van Schendel zullen in Een Romantische Kijk te zien zijn.
